Historia
By understanding the dramatic story of the Ottoman Empire - from its early years as a collection of raiders and conquerors to its undeniable power in the 15th and 16th centuries to its catastrophic collapse in the wreckage of the First World War - one can better grasp the current complexities of the Middle East. Befitting a story of such epic scope and grandeur, every lecture is a treasure trove of historical insights into the people, events, themes, and locales responsible for shaping the story of this often-overlooked empire.

Revisado: 10-07-21
A very good history of the Ottoman Empire from start to end after WW1.
If you want to understand the flow of its history, this is the course to follow. Professor Harl does not get bogged in boring details. He looks at the big picture.

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Another Masterpiece by Andy Weir
Revisado: 07-14-21
If you liked the Martian, you will love this. Should be obligatory reading in all science and engineering classes. And, it is difficult to put down .
The narration by Ray Porter would earn an Oscar if Oscars are given to audio books.

The Prime Ministers brings listeners into the orbits of world figures, including Menachem Begin, Yitzhak Rabin, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, Yasser Arafat, Margaret Thatcher, Princess Diana and the Lubavitcher Rebbe.

Potentially good let down by author
Revisado: 05-22-16
What disappointed you about The Prime Ministers?
The book reads as a mix between a propaganda broadsheet and a party political broadcast.
The snippets of information from the author's private conversations with the prime ministers are interesting. However, we do not need the full text of many public speeches repeated verbatim in the book.
Obviously the author admires the prime ministers, but a book like this should attempt at a balanced review of their policies, characters and relationships. Hero worship belongs to comics.
Has The Prime Ministers turned you off from other books in this genre?
Not at all.
Have you listened to any of Derek Perkins’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First time. Very professional performance.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
The book has enough information to give us some idea about what drove the different prime ministers and some understanding of their characters.
Any additional comments?
A bit more balance, more information and less speeches would have made it a very good book.

Should be compulsary reading
Revisado: 08-25-15
Would you listen to Drunk with Blood again? Why?
I wouldn't have missed this book and would not read it again. It made its point so convincingly, there is no reason to read it again.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Drunk with Blood?
No memorable moment as such. The whole book is simply compelling.
Have you listened to any of Brendan Littlefield’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
First Brendan performance I have listened to. Very well done.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No specific moment as such. Just being continuously amazed and appalled at the same time .
Any additional comments?
After a while, the book gets repetitive. It cannot be faulted for this as it is supposed to a listing of all the killings as described in the original text. It is simply there is too much killing and for the same reasons. "Do not shoot the messenger".

Historia
Famed investigative journalist Eric Schlosser digs deep to uncover secrets about the management of America's nuclear arsenal. A groundbreaking account of accidents, near misses, extraordinary heroism, and technological breakthroughs, Command and Control explores the dilemma that has existed since the dawn of the nuclear age: How do you deploy weapons of mass destruction without being destroyed by them? That question has never been resolved - and Schlosser reveals how the combination of human fallibility and technological complexity still poses a grave risk to mankind.

History Scarier Than Fiction
Revisado: 09-13-14
If you could sum up Command and Control in three words, what would they be?
Should be compulsory reading for politicians and anyone interested in public affairs (or the survival of the species).Strategic Air Command plans for nuclear war and weapon safety were beyond stupid. These people were certifiable. The author makes complex issue understandable. I just wish there was less detail on the "Damascus accident" and more on how SAC was eventually brought to heel (if indeed the plans have changed).I guess we all dodged a bullet.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Armageddon postponed!

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

An almost perfect book for engineers (and nerds)
Revisado: 09-13-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Good story line. Excellent description of the issues and solutions. Could have been a "how to" book had it not been so enjoyable.
The writer's prose is serious and funny at the same time (not easily achieved by lesser mortals).
Highly recommended (and not just for engineers).
Let's hope Hollywood will not mess it up when the inevitable movie comes out.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Martian?
The first few pages when hero realizes he is f***ed and is going to die.
What does R. C. Bray bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
R C Bray reading captures the nuances of the story. His accents are also quite good and sound natural.
A expert reader.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No extreme reactions. Just enjoyed it and kept looking forward to continue with the story.

Internal political and economic strife has pushed the leadership of China to the edge of disaster. And those who wish to consolidate their power are using the opportunity to strike at long-desired Taiwan, as well as the Americans who have protected the tiny nation.

Simplistic and shallow
Revisado: 09-01-13
What would have made Threat Vector better?
More depth to the characters is needed. A better plot with deeper understanding of the geopolitical situation is a must if this book is to seem plausible. Chinese motives were very simplistic and reactions once conflict starts inept.
What could Tom Clancy and Mark Greaney have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Less factual errors would have made the book more enjoyable. For example, Barcelona is not the capital of Spain and does not have an American Embassy. Also, Hong Kong is part of China (self-administering though) and is not a free-for-all zone for special forces and spies to operate at will.
Any additional comments?
Tom Clancy's books are usually better researched and more plausible. Not this one.

One of the best selling History titles of 2009. Examining the Second World War on every front, Andrew Roberts asks whether, with a different decision-making process and a different strategy, Hitler’s Axis might even have won. Were those German generals who blamed everything on Hitler after the war correct, or were they merely scapegoating their former Führer once he was safely beyond defending himself?

An excellent book. Looks at the big picture, yet is full of quotes that help explain the thinking of the main characters.
The author has undertaken an immense review of sources to find the quotes by the main political readers and the many generals on both sides. The context of the main decisions is now understood and somehow makes sense.
The narration by Christian Rodska is simply perfect. There must be a prize he should win.
Highly recommended.
