Historia
A shadowy master criminal has been kidnapping experts from the food industry and stealing both food and equipment. The crimes are so unrelated no one in the world had noticed the connections. No one except Albert Smith, that is. He’s got almost nothing to go on, but with every place he visits, he gets just a little closer to the truth. He’s not working alone though, his faithful sidekick, Rex Harrison the former police dog is right there with him. Can the two of them pull off the impossible and find the man Albert chose to dub ‘the Gastrothief’?

"cozy" murders, a charming old man, and a hilarious police dog
Revisado: 03-04-25
Although some of the murders are grisly, Steve Higgs, the author, never indulges in the details. The lead characters are kind, intelligent, honorable, and brave. The narration is gentle and humorous, in other words, comforting.

Historia
“You shouldn’t be here. It’s too late....” These, heard over the phone, were the last recorded words of successful celebrity-divorce lawyer Richard Pryce, found bludgeoned to death in his bachelor pad with a bottle of wine - a 1982 Chateau Lafite worth £3,000, to be precise. Odd, considering he didn’t drink. Why this bottle? And why those words? And why was a three-digit number painted on the wall by the killer? And, most importantly, which of the man’s many, many enemies did the deed?

All the clues, a great twist, satisfying conclusion
Revisado: 02-17-25
I loved going for the ride on this clue-driven thriller. I had my suspicions and was not completely surprised at the conclusion. If I had really paid attention to the clues I would have been screaming with frustration with the red herrings. Ultimately, a satisfactory unwrapping of mystery. But Anthony cannot sustain too many more stab wounds! Hawthorne's inner personality is gradually being revealed, little by little. Yum.

The New York Times best-selling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty brilliantly reinvents the classic crime novel once again with this clever and inventive mystery starring a fictional version of the author himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes, investigating a case involving buried secrets, murder, and a trail of bloody clues.

Glimpses of Anthony Horowitz
Revisado: 02-16-25
I like the glimpses into Anthony Horowitz's personality, life, history, writing method and work, woven into the narrative. My favorite TV series of all time is Foyle's War.
all the way to the end of the mystery, I did not suspect the murderer. In fact, I paid little attention, ignoring a glaring, obvious clue! I gave myself up to the investigators, going along for the ride to the spine tingling denouement.

Buster the bulldog does not meet Rex Harrison, German Shepherd's high standard
Revisado: 06-10-24
I was spoiled by Higgs's stories of 78 yr-old Albert Smith and his former police dog Rex Harrison. The purebred hoity-toity Rag Doll cat eventually proved her worth and Buster is a fun, flawed character of a dog with superhero fantasies. Somehow, I just didn't connect, perhaps because I am a 78 yr-old woman of limited means who NEVER believed in over-the-top weddings, and who loves Rex's quiet dignity, patience and intense intelligence.. and his absolute love for his human. I didn't get any of that from Buster or the cat (I've already forgotten her name!) and their human, fiftyish attractive Miss Phillips.

An early Agatha with romantic heroine, Anne Beddington, up against an unknown evil tyrant. Great fun as the mystery progresses from England to on shipboard. A charming change of pace for Agatha fans from Poirot and Marple. An American narrator.

Lurid page turner
Revisado: 02-17-24
This is a disturbing crime story that I couldn't put down. The details of cult behavior and beliefs are believable and horrible. The author also continues the love story between the detective duo without, this time, any real sense of why they love each other. I am disappointed that Robin is repeating a mistake she made with her divorced husband Matthew, that of professing love without conviction. It makes Robin unworthy of Strike's devotion. I found the treatment of their desire and love for each other to be shallow, which is disappointing from an author whose storytelling I have greatly admired.

A thriller with such variety
Revisado: 07-27-22
This is the 3rd James bond story I am listening to for the first time in 60 years. I was a teenager when I read every Ian Fleming, Alistair McLain, John LeCarre, Hammond Innes....I did not fully appreciate Fleming's way with words back then. Having been raised on the classics of the 1700s and 1800s since the age of 9, I was accustomed to excellent and detailed writing and so took for granted Fleming's mastery of imaginative writing. At that age I loved the thrilling stories and the speed of acton. Now, after 6 decades of reading adventure tales more for the action than their literary value, I marvel at how Fleming interwove action, interior relection, dialogue, and description so smoothly and intricately. I would say the same of LeCarre. At no point in this story was I tempted to skip a paragraph, as I used to do with Dickens and Melville and even Austen, R.D. Black moor, and Hardy. And I LOVED their stories! On the contrary, at numerous points in THIS book I replayed sentences and paragraphs to savour
the artistry or details. I wish Fleming were still alive to hear my appreciation!

Historia
It's 1949. When war veteran Aloysius Archer is released from Carderock Prison, he is sent to Poca City on parole with a short list of dos and a much longer list of don'ts: do report regularly to his parole officer, don't go to bars, certainly don't drink alcohol, do get a job - and don't ever associate with loose women. The small town quickly proves more complicated and dangerous than Archer's years serving in the war or his time in jail.

A bloody good yarn, pun intended. Looking forward to future stories of Detective Inspector Tanner and further development of his character and that of his new sidekick, Detective Jenny, as well as the Norfolk Broads communities.
