Historia
What started as a flu outbreak on a military base proves deadlier than Ebola. Sympatico Syndrome is unlike anything the world has ever seen. Victims' behavior is changing to accommodate the rapid spread of the virus. Former Navy epidemiologist Cole Evans is well aware of the rare, infectious diseases the military studies. He also knows the government's stance on sharing information with the public, so if the media has already learned about the disease, then it's too late to contain the outbreak.

Poor narration.
Revisado: 01-12-17
I liked the storyline, the characters and the progression. But the narrator did a poor job and I found it distracting. He has a nice deep voice but not much modulation. Additionally the was the "accent". I don't know quite how to describe it, maybe Valley Boy? Words with o's were drawn out oooo's. Silly and affected-sounding. Continue the series but get a new narrator.

The good guys vs the bad guys
Revisado: 10-03-16
This book brings home the need for community especially in troubled times. The narrator does an especially fine job. I judge a book by how I feel when I finish it. I was sad at the end because I wanted to know what would happen next. I wanted more. Great book.

In The Lightkeepers, we follow Miranda, a nature photographer who travels to the Farallon Islands, an exotic and dangerous archipelago off the coast of California, for a one-year residency capturing the landscape. Her only companions are the scientists studying there, odd and quirky refugees from the mainland living in rustic conditions; they document the fish populations around the island, the bold trio of sharks called the Sisters that hunt the surrounding waters, and the overwhelming bird population....

Liked this book more than I expected
Revisado: 09-14-16
I listened to this book over several days. I thought that it started a bit slow and wasn't sure that it would hold my interest. I persisted and became engrossed by the story. In retrospect, I think that "slow" start had more to do with the character Melissa's limited social skills. After the first several chapters I was eager to return to this engrossing story.

Loved the first book
Revisado: 08-20-16
The storyline in this second book of the series was thin compared to the first book. The characters (other than the narrator) are too incidental. I realize that it is told from the narrator's perspective but either she is very self absorbed or the other members of her group are terribly dull. I will listen to the next book because I like the premise of this series but if it is as numbing as this one, I am done. The books could be a bit longer and perhaps this would help. But that would reduce revenues.

Engaging story, great narration
Revisado: 07-20-16
I found the protagonist to be complicated, as most people are, if you scratch beneath the surface. I was caught up in the story from the beginning. When the crime is solved I was reminded that good people can do bad things and that motivations are not easily understood. The narration was outstanding.

Interesting story, lots of action
Revisado: 06-18-16
I like adventure novels and if they are science based, so much the better. I appreciated that although the characters continue into a second novel, the author did not end Breakthrough with a cheesy cliffhanger so that we would have to purchase another book to have resolution. I would purchase the next novel because I liked the relationships and characters from the first . The narrator did a nice job, even the female voices.

Poor Narration

This audio book would have been more enjoyable if the book had not sounded as though it were being read out loud in class by a disinterested "D" student. The pronunciation of common words sound as though they were being misspoken by a GPS voice. Is this the best that you can do?

Still one of my all-time favorite novels
Revisado: 02-25-16
I read this novel when it was first published and raved to my reading friends about this beautifully written book. I love the television series and cannot believe the extreme attention to detail given to the visual interpretation of this wonderful story. I just finished listening to the recorded version of Outlander and even though I know the story well I could not stop listening to Davina Porter's performance. She brought Diana Galbadon's lyrical language to life. It was fun to compare the small differences between the book and television series. Nothing in the story suffered, there is simply more detail in the novel. Bringing Ms Galbadon on board as a consultant to the series was brilliant. I can attest that the remaining books in the series carry the story and characters forward and are in no way lesser books than this one. They engaged me from beginning to end and left me anxious to read the next one.

Historia
In a richly drawn 18th-century London, Scottish exile Lord John faces a difficult situation. His cousin Olivia is engaged to marry the Honorable Joseph Trevelyan, but he has just observed something of a rather personal nature that, if confirmed, might put an end to any talk of marital bliss. Determined to investigate further, Lord John is distracted when the Crown calls for his services. A comrade in arms has been slain, and to complicate matters, the victim may have been a traitor. Now Lord John has not one but two puzzling mysteries to solve.

Disjointed and disappointing
Revisado: 11-24-14
What would have made Lord John and the Private Matter better?
This book seemed to be dependent on having read earlier books in the series. I found it difficult to care about Lord John and I didn't find him very interesting.
Would you ever listen to anything by Diana Gabaldon again?
Maybe. She repeats much of the plot narrative throughout her novels. It seems as if she is being paid by the word. I tried listening to Dragonfly in Amber, and lost interest quickly.
What three words best describe Jeff Woodman’s voice?
More than adequate. He has impressive skills with accent and timbre.
Any additional comments?
Diana Gabaldon is an amazing story teller, but she does repeat quite a bit, especially in the later books of the Outlander series. I just didn't find this story very engaging. The two plot lines were too drawn out. Lord John had to explain his deductions and even then they didn't make much sense.
