The main character is relatable and interesting. I appreciated seeing her development as the story unfolded. The world building makes sense and creates a solid backdrop for the narrative.

I struggled to finish this book because it was pretty dark and violent. I also got frustrated with the ongoing bad choices the main character makes. Her flaws are realistic given her context, it was just irritating to read about her jumping to conclusions over and over again.

Gabriel Union did a wonderful job in the writing and narration of this book. She is vulnerable and brave in her unabashed telling of truth.

This is one of those books that it is definitely meant to be listened to! I appreciate Tabitha's pouring into my soul. We all need to learn and be reminded of the life's wisdom she shares. Enjoy!

The premise of this book seemed interesting, however poor character and plot development made this really difficult to finish. Although the characters are in their late 20s their maturity level seemed more appropriate for adolescents. Their was a very obvious plot twist that was dependent on the main character being obtuse. I am always up for a fun and light read, but this was a tough read because the main character's stupidity paired with her habit of minimizing her friends to their physical appearance made her unlikable and the plot was so obvious there was no surprise.

I am really appreciating the character development and world building in this series thus far. The author also does a great job of depicting the complexity of emotions and family.

I've enjoyed this series. The characters and plot are great, and I'm enjoying the growth of the characters throughout each book. one drawback is that monologues and dialogues can run on for an unrealistic amount of time.

Dr. Cooper's personal accounts paired with modern black feminist theory clarified my understanding and nourished my spirit. I now have language for concepts I've been thinking about and discussing, but grappling to properly name. There are points at which I have a different perspective, but I appreciate those areas of the book just as much for challenging me to think critically about my perspective. Thank you for sharing yourself in manner that brings theory into reality.

I appreciated the premise of this book, however it failed to deliver. Everything was from the narrow lens of the main character. The story read as a teenager's fantasy about being the most important, loved and valued person in the world. Each aspect of the plot and the world are there to prove her worth, which does not allow the other characters to have a real presence in the book. Rather than the story reading as if Jade is a self-centered person, it moreso comes off as if the author has not matured enough to understand how to see beyond their own scope and has created a world from that limited perspective. Furthermore, the story is straightforward in some ways, but the entire premise of how Jade got to this different world is unclear. The absence of the premise is even more pronounced due to the overt explanation of the magic system through Jade basically having a computer screen in her vision. Much of the writing felt over simplified since some of the characters were described by just comparing them to characters in other books. Occassionally, a setting that could add context to the world would be described, but the description would be finished off with "ecetera". Conversely, Jade would check her "stats" every day and the list kept growing, yet the author still included the entire list of her stats every time when a summary would have been sufficient. The details that would have added depth and context to the world were missing, while dry data was included. Jade's description of minimal wars and violence back on earth seemed odd in its lack of insight from someone that spent so much time on the computer. There was also minimal diversity with only one character that was not involved in the plot described as having dread locks. Even the magic system was used to justify a class system so Jade didn't need to feel bad about being a noble. It feels as if the author needs time to mature and gain a better understanding of people and how systems work. Investing in our own growth journey helps each of us in also better understanding others and improves the writing.

This book is a beautiful story filled with meaning. The world building, character development and sociological context are all elegantly done. It been a long time since a book has swept me off my feet. This did it:-) I am startled at all the author fit into one book. The narration was perfect due to the actress having a rich voice and her ability to clearly shift between characters.
