Historia
One month into our stay, we'd managed to dispatch most of our charges. We executed the chickens. One of the cats disappeared, clearly disgusted with our urban ways. And Lucky [the cow] was escaping almost daily. It seemed we didn't have much of a talent for farming. And we still had eleven months to go." Antonia Murphy, you might say, is an unlikely farmer. Born and bred in San Francisco, she spent much of her life as a liberal urban cliché, and her interactions with the animal kingdom rarely extended past dinner.

Ye Gods
Revisado: 09-02-18
This book would have made a better read than audio. The author comes across as a half witted fool gathering animals on a whim, trailing around with an untrained dog, a precocious daughter and a disabled son who she fondly refers to as an alien. There is nothing wrong with a bohemian lifestyle but why would you expect to be taken seriously while wearing a head band with horns? The animals though loved are subjected to well meaning neglect resulting in preventable and painful health conditions. Though funny in parts I wouldn’t recommend this book. Sorry to be harsh.

But Emma can't share any of this, because Emma's mom is dead. Luckily there's a loophole. The women in Emma's family all have a special destiny that comes to them in the form of a dream, and when they finally achieve this destiny, they're rewarded with a vision of all their extraordinary ancestors.

Sweet and simple
Revisado: 07-03-16
When I first started listening I thought this was a children's book, but the more I heard, the more I liked it. With plenty of faith and hope, the heroine sets out to restore her family's fortunes and stay in her happy place. This is like an Enid Blyton book, just a good old fashioned tale with a little philosophy thrown in for good measure. A nice, easy listen.

The New York Times best-selling novel from Garth Stein - a heart-wrenching but deeply funny and ultimately uplifting story of family, love, loyalty, and hope - a captivating look at the wonders and absurdities of human life...as only a dog could tell it.

Here We Go Again
Revisado: 12-07-13
I'm sure that this would have been a good book, but once again let down by a narrator that attempted accents that she could not perform. After listening to a strangled version of Scots for an hour - I gave up, had a glass of wine and switched on the radio!

A Prayer for Owen Meany

Historia
Of all of John Irving's books, this is the one that lends itself best to audio. In print, Owen Meany's dialogue is set in capital letters; for this production, Irving himself selected Joe Barrett to deliver Meany's difficult voice as intended. In the summer of 1953, two 11-year-old boys – best friends – are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy's mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn't believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God's instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary and terrifying.

What a beautiful story. Owen Meany made me laugh out loud in parts (the Nativity Play) and I cried quietly in others. I have no doubt that I will listen to this book again.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Great!

John Grisham is the master of the legal novel. Always plausible and well put together it describes complex family relationships that have been impacted by the actions of white supremacy advocates in USA.
