Imagine Tony Robbins without the personality or story telling ability and you would not come close to this book. The information is outdated, the advice is reductive, and sometimes feels like ot can be damaging (for example the section on self-doubt exalts an ignore-the-voices and toughen-up-buttercup approach). It feels like the author watched 300 and read Extreme Ownership and wrote something that sounds like he is giving a last minute book report as he is not very knowledgeable on either Spartans or the Marines. Seriously, the only thing inspiring about this book is to know that if this person can have this book published, then anything is possible.

Much better than condensed business books that would take the founder's words and turn it into generic lessons around terms like "resilience", I enjoyed rather hearing the entire story from the founders themselves, very enlightening

An enchanting story that brings alternative ideas with Nordic undertones to life through the eyes of the Wise Child. Absolutely adored the voices and emotion put into each sentence. Wouldn't want to listen to it any other way. Can't wait to dive into the rest of the series!

This book was a joy to listen to. I found myself excited and energized for the simple ability to think and to play with ideas and have that lead you on adventures. A rekindled love of math and science that, as an engineer, I had lost somewhere along the way. Truly a wonderful listen for anyone in STEM looking for stimulation.

Anyone can use the sound advice given in this book to their advantage in whatever field that they are in. Prosperous is the city that does not engage in war but is still prepared for one.

One thing that anyone listening to this course can agree on is the love that the lecturer has for his field. His curiosity and knowledge is infectious and you find yourself at the end of the book quicker than you would like. Very informative, very well put together.

This book is a collection of contradictory tropes and platitudes. "It's not hard, it's new", followed by "Work hard and use what you know". I've listened to every second hoping to find some practical value, but it never came.

The narrator was also contradictory to the message. I couldn't take the claims of a lifetime of building business seriously when the voice sounds like they've only just hit 30 years old.

There are many more books on business with a lot more value than this one around. Don't waste your time.

If you are coming to this book looking for inspirational stories that are relevant to your business and the times we live in, then you've most certainly come to the wrong place. The majority of this book takes place within the context of the sixties and has little to do with the information age.

Having said that, it is amazing how the writing and narration had me on the edge of my seat as I listened to the unfolding of invisible wars between the pound sterling and hedges or the state of Piggly Wiggly stocks in the twenties. Johnny Heller is the perfect voice for the dramatic tales that John Brooks have chosen to give life to normally dull affairs such as price fixing or currency devaluation.

For this reason, although there is little outside of the damages that a lack of communication can have on business which you can use practically in the real world, I would still recommend the book as a purely leasurely stroll down an avenue of time that seems as strange to us today as would any other once-upon-a-time fantasy.

I've been wanting to read a book by Nir for quite a while now, as I've often heard his blog posts read on the Optimal Living Daily podcasts.

When I started this book, I was pleasantly surprised. So much new information flooded my ears that I found myself thinking about the contents and monitoring my behaviour all day. I found the section challenging my long-held belief in willpower as a finite resource especially intriguing. It's been a fun listen all the way through.

There is, however, a dip in quality nearing the latter middle half of the book. Research seems to be scrounged together and allegorical evidence from Nir's own life is used in the stead of studies. I find myself dismissing entire sections where pacts are discussed (am I seriously to believe he burns money when not attending the gym?). There is also an entire section on parenting that sounds like it was intended for another book, but made to fit this one to fill the pages instead. The only way to get around it is to imagine employees as children, which also wears thin after a while.

I like the book, and listening to it made me rethink my habits and my triggers. For that alone I can rate it well and say that it is worth the read

You're probably not going to learn anything new from this book. In fact, if you read the title, then you've most probably accurately guessed the contents already.

BUT

It works. It may be the corny advice that verges on platitude, and it may sound like it's a recording from the 80's, sure. Yet, if you listen to it each day, even just a little, then you might just find yourself a bit more motivated, a bit more prepared to take on that thing you've been meaning to get to. It won't change your life in an instant, but its tiny effects on the subconscious really does compound.
