Tiresome
Revisado: 10-04-21
Narrator voice obnoxious. She tries to do voices for characters but she just gets nasally and whiny. Abbie's lying is truly tiresome. Her need to hide things from her husband is not charming nor endearing. Her name calling is juvenile. She needs to grow up. I listen because the subject matter is interesting but the people are less than engaging.

Historia
Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she's a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she's a disgrace; to design mavens, she's a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.
Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette's intensifying allergy to Seattle - and people in general - has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands.

interesting Alaska Story
Revisado: 03-10-18
Good story but narration is less than optimal. Narrator's phrasing difficult to listen to as her inflection is in phrases, not sentences.

I liked the story and actually cared about the characters but if I'd known there were creepy people eaters I wouldn't have listened. But overall it was an interesting concept I just wish the author had given a hint as to the source of the virus.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 05-21-12
I have read and listened to a number of Orson Scott Card books and have enjoyed them all. I can't say I completely enjoyed this book but it definitely captured my attention. The narration was done well and it made it easy listening. If someone wanted to know more about Mormonism and the Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints, this would be a good book for engaging that subject. The premise is a bit fantastical, as are many of Card's books but the others have been science fiction/fantasy and that made those books easier to take. This is a well-crafted story of a family that is struggling with some financial difficulties which force them to make a move that is brilliant and yet devastating. It should cause any adult to consider how much we actually pay attention to the children in our lives and to seek ways to draw them out when they are becoming withdrawn. I would recommend it.

Historia
Something terrible has happened in the snowbound village of Kingdom Come, Wyoming, where 12 eerily identical houses stand dark and abandoned. Meals remain untouched on dining room tables, cars are still in garages, and the town's residents have vanished into thin air. This is the disturbing setting where vacationing medical examiner Maura Isles and her traveling companions find themselves trapped during a ferocious snowstorm.

Mixed Feelings
Revisado: 05-21-12
Would you try another book from Tess Gerritsen and/or Tanya Eby?
I would definitely try another Gerritsen book but not if Eby is narrator. I have read a number of Gerritsen's books and many of them are at the edges of medical possibility but I like them. I hadn't realized, until I listened to this book, that Gerritsen was the author of the Rizzoli and Isles stories. I was pleasantly surprised to have an audiobook version of this series until I heard the narrator. Oh my. Not good at all.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Seriously? Is this person made of steel? It seemed a bit far-fetched.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tanya Eby?
Almost anyone else. Tanya Eby is a poor reader with bad inflection and pacing. I like Carolyn McCormick who narrated the Hunger Games.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Turn it into an episode of the Rizzoli and Isles TV show and I'd watch it.

Rolling on the Floor Funny... and sad
Revisado: 05-21-12
Where does A Confederacy of Dunces rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
It's definitely one of my favorites.
What other book might you compare A Confederacy of Dunces to and why?
I don't think there's any book that compares to this one. This is unique with characters the likes of whom I have not met before.
Have you listened to any of Barrett Whitener’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Have not listened. The narration was brilliant with well imagined voices.
Any additional comments?
I have this book in paperback and had never read it. I just wasn't sure I would like it but then I saw it as a special here at audible.com and so I tried it. I was pleasantly surprised and if I hadn't been listening to it in a public location, I would have laughed out loud. Incredibly conceived characters with depth and charm. I would like to meet these people. :-)

Historia
This touching and uproarious novel by author Paul Murray made everyone’s best fiction of 2010 lists, including The Washington Post, Financial Times, Village Voice, and others. Why Skippy dies and what happens next is the mystery that links the boys of Dublin’s Seabrook College (Ruprecht Van Doren, the overweight genius obsessed with string theory; Carl, the teenager drug dealer and borderline psychotic; Philip Kilfether, the basketball-playing midget) to their parents and teachers in ways that no one could have imagined.

Not My Kind of Story
Revisado: 05-21-12
What disappointed you about Skippy Dies?
When I first read the premise of the book, it seemed to be something that would capture my attention. The beginning of the audiobook also was engaging - and then it got into the backstory of what led up to Skippy's death. I enjoyed the the various voices and characters that were created by after awhile I couldn't listen anymore. The language of the story was just too vile and much of it seemed extraneous to the actual point of the story. This story is in three parts and I couldn't even make it through the first part. I found myself really caring about Skippy and whatever his problem was but, unlike a hardcopy book, I couldn't skip ahead, skipping over the parts that were totally offensive, to find the heart of the story. I did like some of the other characters, some of the teachers, but in general I found the content of the story to be nauseating. Perhaps I'm out of touch with the raw language of teenagers.
What do you think your next listen will be?
Currently listening to a series of books by Victoria Laurie.
Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Have not listened.
What character would you cut from Skippy Dies?
There's a boy from Russia or Italy (see how much I paid attention) who was nothing but offensive.
Any additional comments?
This is definitely a book I would return if that option was available.
