Sue is the best
Revisado: 03-05-24
Forrest has some crazy adventures- and Sue is a fun character. However, the film is much better. The movie has a sweet nostalgic feeling, where as the book is really bizzare at times. It is definitely worth listening to if you are a fan of the film.

Helpful and funny

The author is super funny and helpful. I love Marie Kondo, but this author brings some humor to the tidy and declutter process.

Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. In the Depression era, Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers' "Most Spectacular Show on Earth". There he meets the freaks, grifters, and misfits that populate this world: Marlena, beautiful star of the equestrian act; August, her charismatic but twisted husband (and the circus' animal trainer); and Rosie, the seemingly untrainable elephant Jacob cares for.

Historia
Julie Flygare was on an ambitious path to success, entering law school at age 22, when narcolepsy destroyed the neurological boundaries between dreaming and reality in her brain. She faced terrifying hallucinations, paralysis, and excruciating sleepiness, aspects of dream sleep taking place while wide awake. Yet, narcolepsy was a wake-up call for Julie. Her illness propelled her onto a journey she never imagined, from lying paralyzed on her apartment floor to dancing euphorically at a nightclub; from the classrooms of Harvard Medical School to the start line of the Boston Marathon.

Inspiring memoir, but she also seems lucky
Revisado: 06-26-23
I was recently diagnosed with type 2 narcolepsy after 20 years of struggle. Symptoms started in my teens, but I wasn’t given an official diagnosis until I spent a week in a French sleep hospital and went through tons of tests. Julie describes what it is like to have narcolepsy very well, and I loved how training in marathons helped give her greater purpose.
However, I’m a still struggling to understand how she paid her bills while going to law school, and after. She chose to write, instead of practice law, which is wonderful. However, The absence of “work” in her story is weird. I get the impression this author had a lot of financial and emotional support from her family, and a lot of people don’t have that luxury. I had to work 30 hours a week in coffee shops and nannying all through undergrad, while also having narcolepsy symptoms. This illness has greatly interfered with my personal and professional life. I was once a stage actress and elementary school teacher, but had to stop recently because I could not function at work or memorize lines. Me not working has put a tremendous amount of financial stress on my marriage. The author never talks about struggles related to rent, medical bills, or fear of homelessness. She waited a short time to get a diagnosis. Not everyone is so lucky.
Regardless, I am happy to have purchased her book, and to know I am not alone in this struggle. Julie Flygare has inspired me to start training for running marathons, and for that, I am grateful. ❤️

Historia
We live in a world obsessed with drinking. We drink at baby showers and work events, brunch and book club, graduations and funerals. Yet no one ever questions alcohol’s ubiquity—in fact, the only thing ever questioned is why someone doesn’t drink. It is a qualifier for belonging and if you don’t imbibe, you are considered an anomaly. As a society, we are obsessed with health and wellness, yet we uphold alcohol as some kind of magic elixir, though it is anything but.

Such a life changing book for me, and hopefully others who struggle with the AA program. I’ve been around old timers in AA, and I feel like they can be very black and white, and don’t necessarily see the gray. Holly Whitaker does. Thank you 🥰

Thank you, Rosie Cappuccino, for this wonderful audio book. It has helped me immensely, and I plan to buy a hardback, and extra copies for some of my loved ones that don’t understand but want to learn more about the condition.

Heavy story, but also demonstrates tremendous courage and bravery. Excellent read or listen to survivors of psychological and domestic abuse. My heart goes out to Vikki and her family. I finished listening to the book in one day
