This book by Dr. Jason Fung has the potential to change your life! It has changed mine. The problem is that it is not an easy read. It’s probably better to do the first reading in print, honestly. The narrator does a pretty good job trying to read with interest, and with meaningful changes in tone. However, he mispronounces so many of the terms. It is annoying and confusing. Sometimes I found myself having to go to the print edition to figure out what the word actually was when the pronunciation was so bad. I really wish that they would come out with a new edition read by Dr. Fung. He is a great presenter.

There is some interesting world building here. Unfortunately, there is also a lot of direct preaching of New Age/Buddhist philosophy from the horse’s mouths. The echo effect and voice tone used gives everything the horses say the feeling it is a pronouncement from the Great and Glorious Oz. It would have worked better without it. Still, I finished it, will not buy the rest of the trilogy.

I want to say I was a little hesitant to read a book by Jim Butcher’s son, after being disappointed by efforts of other authors to pass on their writing to their offspring. I want to give James J. Butcher a round of applause! This is a book set in his own world, with interesting characters who grow, develop and learn, I love that the main character is a young man who lives with real limits and struggles. This book is NOT a Dresden knock off! Read it for its own sake, and forget who the writer is related to. I think you will enjoy it.

Needs More Character

I wanted to like this book and this character. I really did. It just fell flat. And the end was one blow by blow fight scene that just did not know how to be over. I am more interested in character development and learning about the world being created than in the minutiae of every bit of gore in a battle. The humor attempts fell flat after a while. Just all out of balance.

Not Francis’ Best

I have read and enjoyed a large number of Dick Francis books, and this one has all the classic elements: The man who stumbles into a mystery that needs to be solved, and takes great risks to do the right thing. But the horse is barely present in this story, and the female characters are cardboard. His wife, in particular, is unnecessarily pathetic. She could have had some courage without hurting the plot, and it would have made her much more real. Still, a mostly fun read.

It’s a silly, light -hearted, humorous romance. Perfect for light reading. Perfect for the beach. I think it’s better than anything in the Shopaholic series, although those are also fun. I wish there were a sequel.

This story is okay, but does not live up to Dick Francis’ works. Established characters act in uncharacteristic ways. Marina has had a complete personality transplant from the brave woman in the last book. Okay, but not great, and no narrator matches up to Simon Prebble.

This is classic Anne McCaffrey, and a fun tale. Be sure you get this version. There is also an abridged version only 1/3 as long, and it is terrible. It leaves out all the color and charm of her writing!

This book is just a fun little mystery. It would be a fun listen if the reader had bothered to learn some basic pronunciation. It's conSERVator, not CONservator, for instance. Just how this was allowed to go throufh, I don't know. Does anyone listen before the audio book goes out? It's jarring.

This is the end of the story that we have all waited for. It was extra long in coming, because they chose to publish this book in halves. Peace Talks and Battle Ground are one narrative, and they do not stand alone. Together, they make a really solid Dresden novel, with a lot of pathos and some major development of the overall plot of the series, despite the majority of the book being battle descriptions. I love this series, and I waited patiently for the next installment, only to be very disappointed that Peace Talks was incomplete. I am glad to see that Battle Ground does give the story a real conclusion, as Harry definitely turns a corner in his life. It does seem unfair to have to buy two books to get one complete narrative. I hope this is not the beginning of a trend.
