Historia
Will Darling came back from the Great War with a few scars, a lot of medals, and no idea what to do next. Inheriting his uncle's chaotic secondhand bookshop is a blessing...until strange visitors start making threats. First a criminal gang, then the War Office, both telling Will to give them the information they want, or else. Will has no idea what that information is, and nobody to turn to, until Kim Secretan - charming, cultured, oddly attractive - steps in to offer help. As Kim and Will try to find answers and outrun trouble, mutual desire grows along with the danger.

Spicy spy romance
Revisado: 12-03-24
The narrator was excellent. Good spy story with great characters. Believable romance with good chemistry. I didn’t quite expect the explicit scenes but it was all very well written and you can easily skip them if you prefer fade to black.

Historia
Fourteen-year-old Mona isn't like the wizards charged with defending the city. She can't control lightning or speak to water. Her familiar is a sourdough starter, and her magic only works on bread. She has a comfortable life in her aunt's bakery making gingerbread men dance. But Mona's life is turned upside down when she finds a dead body on the bakery floor. An assassin is stalking the streets of Mona's city, preying on magic folk, and it appears that Mona is his next target. And in an embattled city suddenly bereft of wizards, the assassin may be the least of Mona's worries.

Not cozy + bad accent
Revisado: 10-08-24
I liked the writing and world building, but this was recommended to me as a cozy fantasy and it was not that (not the book’s fault, but I had the wrong expectation so am warning others who may have heard the same thing). The initial setting was cozy, with magic in the bakery. But the main story is one of a young girl being scared and doing brave things in the lead-up to (and during) a war.
It was mostly a struggle to keep listening because of the narrator’s wobbly English accent. It was distracting and I wish she would’ve just used her own accent.

Unlikely adventurer
Revisado: 07-12-24
A spy / adventure novel starring a bored old lady. Definitely dated, with very heavy handed pro American passages. Going into it I was expecting a cozy mystery type book (a la Poirot) but it was much more action oriented, not cozy.

Historia
An outbreak of kleptomania at a student hostel was not normally the sort of crime that aroused Hercule Poirot's interest. But then he saw the list of stolen and vandalized items: a stethoscope, some old flannel trousers, a box of chocolates, a slashed rucksack, and a diamond ring found in a bowl of soup. The list made absolutely no sense at all. But, reasoned Poirot, if this was merely a petty thief at work, why was everyone at the hostel so frightened?

Another excellent Poirot
Revisado: 12-28-23
I once again thoroughly enjoyed listening to a Poirot mystery, excellently narrated by Hugh Fraser. The only thing I disliked was that the chapters in the Audible file did not match up with the book chapters. This made it more difficult to find my place again.

Historia
From idyllic small towns to claustrophobic urban landscapes, Mallory Viridian is constantly embroiled in murder cases that only she has the insight to solve. But outside of a classic mystery novel, being surrounded by death doesn’t make you a charming amateur detective, it makes you a suspect and a social pariah. So when Mallory gets the opportunity to take refuge on a sentient space station, she thinks she has the solution. Surely the murders will stop if her only company is alien beings. At first her new existence is peacefully quiet…and markedly devoid of homicide.

Annoying intonation
Revisado: 12-06-22
I like the story but have stopped listening because the narration is not my cup of tea. The narrator’s voice is whiny and their intonation of at least half of the sentences is identical, which makes it sound robotic. I couldn’t focus on the plot because the voice was too distracting.
