Historia
From the legendary actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film...and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.

Like a Sunday afternoon walk through memories
Revisado: 02-18-25
People have complained that this book is too slow - that it has too much detail… to the contrary, I loved this! At first, I didn’t know how things would connect, but if you can stick it out to the end, it’s beautiful. Tom Hanks is such an incredible performer and listening to this read by him probably made it better.
There is only one actor that I wish hadn’t been used for a character - that of Ike. His voice just didn’t fit.
Don’t expect huge action. Listen to this story as though you’re sitting on a front porch swing on a late summer day with a glass of lemonade (or g&t or mint julep :) and listening to your grandfather tell you about your family and their experiences over the many decades when they were young and the world was different.

This was a very enjoyable romp through a period in Scottish history splashed with the color of a fictional character… and the narrator is wonderful!

Great story, I love the way the author brings separate threads together - what sounds like disparate tales becomes a wild and heart tugging ride. Also, the author’s note at the end was delightful 😊

Historia
The orphaned Elsie Camden learned as a girl that there were two kinds of wizards in the world: those who pay for the power to cast spells and those, like her, born with the ability to break them. But as an unlicensed magic user, her gift is a crime. Commissioned by an underground group known as the Cowls, Elsie uses her spellbreaking to push back against the aristocrats and help the common man. Elite magic user Bacchus Kelsey is one elusive spell away from his mastership when he catches Elsie breaking an enchantment. To protect her secret, Elsie strikes a bargain.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

Full of sadness
Revisado: 02-07-24
The words used in this book are beautiful. The writing is beautiful. The narrator does a beautiful job. However, this book is full of sadness from the first chapter to the very end - I found no joy.

1950: Margaret Devonshire (Megs) is a 17-year-old student of mathematics and physics at Oxford University. When her beloved eight-year-old brother asks Megs if Narnia is real, logical Megs tells him it’s just a book for children, and certainly not true. Homebound due to his illness, and remaining fixated on his favorite books, George presses her to ask the author of the recently released novel The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe a question: “Where did Narnia come from?”

Absolutely fell in love with this book!
Revisado: 02-03-24
I’ve always loved CS Lewis‘s books about Narnia. This story every heartstring and took me into those worlds and taught me about the author his life and his loves through the eyes of a boy and his sister. My mother would have loved this book and it reminded me of her.
