This was my first book by this author as he’s come highly rated in this genre. I definitely look forward to reading more of his books, but this one didn’t really do it for me.
The story itself was good but it jumped around way too much across different time lines. There are also an insane amount of characters in this book which made it super confusing to follow.
I know this author’s style is “slow burn” but there was a LOT of filler in this book. It’s a 12-ish hour listen that could’ve easily been done in 7-8 hours. Also, the end felt rushed. Nothing much happens in the first 9 hours or so and then BAM! The last 2 hours… ALL THE THINGS!
I will say, the narrator did a great job! With the amount of international characters he had to manage, I could easily tell who was speaking by the distinct voices/accents he gave each person.

Lila Nash is on the verge of landing her dream job - working as a prosecutor under the Hennepin County Attorney - and has settled into a happy life with her boyfriend, Joe Talbert. But when a woman is pulled from the Mississippi River, barely alive, things in the office take a personal turn. The police believe the woman’s assailant is local photographer Gavin Spenser, but the case quickly flounders as the evidence wears thin. It seems Gavin saw this investigation coming - and no one can imagine how carefully he has prepared.

They saved the best for last
Revisado: 04-07-25
I've never gone back and read a book again after finishing it, but now that I've completed this series I might just do that. This was hands down the best series I've ever read and this book was the best of them all! I loved how each book allowed you to really get to know each character one by one and even though the stories were all very different, they all tied together. I loved that we got to learn more about mysterious Lyla's past and see how far she's come. This book was spectacularly written, beautifully performed by the narrators and hits you with a big twist at the end that you'll never see coming!

Amazing!
Revisado: 03-21-25
This book was heartbreakingly beautiful. The author doesn't waste any time with fluff in the beginning, as it's assumed you've already read the previous books in the series. One of the things I love most about this author is his ability to make you feel exactly what the characters are feeling. The fear, the pain, the adrenaline, the heartbreak... You really find yourself connecting to these people and going through it with them. I can't wait to start the next one!

They keep getting better!
Revisado: 03-14-25
Ok, in the second book I was sad there was no mention of Joe and Lyla but this one definitely held its own (and we got a little Lyla too!) This story line was gripping and the characters were easy to connect with. Just when you think you know… everything gets flipped on its side! One thing I will say about this author, you can expect a great ending… but they’re not always the ending you want!

That ending though...
Revisado: 03-11-25
I got sucked in by Book 1 and even though I read the reviews that Joe was not in this story (even though it's the Joe Talbert series 🤷🏼♀️) I read it anyways. Overall, it was a good story - you definitely need to pay attention though because there are a lot of characters. I was not a fan of this narrator AT ALL and felt they needed a stronger male voice for this story. The ending was a let down for me - not because it was bad - it just wasn't the ending I wanted for these characters. I'm looking forward to the next book to see how the story continues!

Speechless...
Revisado: 03-02-25
This is not my usual reading. I ran out of credits and choose this from the selection included with my subscription. The beginning was a little slow and if I'm being honest, I half considered looking for something else, but I am SO glad I didn't. Honestly, this is one of the best books I've ever read/listened to. The story was so captivating and heart wrenching and suspenseful all at once. I just finished the book and I'm writing this review with tears still in my eyes. What an amazing story!

I didn’t want it to end!!
Revisado: 01-26-25
This isn’t my usual reading genre, but a lot of friends were suggesting this book so I thought I’d give it a go. Usually I fizzle out on these types of books because I feel like I’m being preached to or lectured, but the way Mel presented this concept was brilliant. It truly felt like having a conversation with a friend. I laughed, I cried and I could relate to so much of what she was saying. I will definitely be reading this again (and again…) not only for the insightful wisdom, but also the “chat” with an old friend.

No joke, I literally clapped at the end of this book. It was an INCREDIBLE story!! I’ve always enjoyed this author but this one might just be my favorite so far. The story just kept unfolding and every new layer was a complete surprise - I had no chance at predicting a thing in this book! It was truly engaging from start to finish and the ending was PERFECTION. Well done! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Solid story
Revisado: 01-02-25
It was a little slower moving than what I typically like but I really enjoyed the narration so I didn't mind. Once things started falling into place for me I found myself listening for longer stretches and becoming very intrigued with how the story was unfolding. This was my second book by this author and I really enjoy her writing - I'll definitely keep reading her work!

Fool me once…
Revisado: 12-16-24
This was my second Colleen Hoover book. It was also my last. Even though I found the first one frustratingly ridiculous, I gave Verity a shot because a few friends had recommended it. I was immediately put off by the narrator of Verity’s voice as it was so flat and mundane but it just continued to go downhill from there. This book is essentially soft p0rn so if you’re into that kind of thing, you’ll love the HOURS of graphic sex scenes here.
I won’t get into the other highly disturbing feature in this story so I don’t give anything away but, if you’re a mother/parent - be warned. There were parts I had turn off or fast forward because I was feeling sick. And while there *is* a twist at the end, it’s sooooo far fetched it’s laughable.
So long CoHo. Not for me.
