Alright, but bland tongue-in-cheek humor
Revisado: 04-08-25
I love the Familiar, but the Main is a very chill dude. He just gets good skills stacked up, good fortune stacked, easily gets along with everyone and nothing actually fazes him. The humor pokes like a subdued elbow nudge: fun, but fleeting and not vibe setting.
Good narrator and a few great characters. Just not one I'm going to continue or re-read.

Amusing, but not a keeper
Revisado: 02-03-24
A tad slow to ease the reader into the world, but believable characters, plot points revealing in organic ways, and does have some surprising twists. Overall alright and kept me going to listen to more of the series.
The hero is a depressed drifter of minimal Power. Raised poor and treated as delusional in family. He recognizes these things about himself, often reflecting on it, but not doing so in obnoxious manner.
Best parts are the plot points of the story.
The narrator has the perfect 'older, smoker woman' voice...but it's used more than once. I relied on name to keep them straight. Otherwise his range did well across the cast.

Cynical hero is funny
Revisado: 08-16-23
A cynical man starting up a boyhood dream of become a career Villain after a mix up postal package delivers a haunted, magic cloak. And told with funny timing as the reader slips into enjoying the hilarious, almost banal, world filled with aliens invasions, long named super heroes, time traveling clones, and all the drama of a comic book world.
The true talent is how enchanting I found our villainous hero. For once I liked how he can passionately add his views on topics like religion, politics, social expectations, ect, without feeling like the author is preaching at the reader. Gary is educated enough to have put thought into it and not afraid to voice his opinion.
The stories are cleverly fun too. It gives the vibes of 'Hichhikers Guide to the Galaxy' & the 'Guardians of Galaxy' overlapped in a Batman-noir city.
Narration has a good range of different voices. Absolutely well done. And he gives Gary a likable tone even when he talks about topics normal preachy. Not whinning or annoying at all. Honestly I like how easily I feel like befriending him. Even when he talks of pop culture I might not get; context comes across alright.

Historia
Thaless is still reeling from the actions of the assassin known as the Emperor's Mask, and in the aftermath, believers in magical superiority have been greatly emboldened. When a goblin girl named Tinga Vreeg goes missing, it seems like a tragic consequence of the atmosphere of hostility and anger toward the non-magical. But when Tane and Kadka investigate, they find a much deeper mystery. Tinga isn't the only one missing—and she might have been on the trail of something important herself.

Of the three book, my least favorite
Revisado: 08-10-23
it's not terrible, but you'll first notice the narrator. A moderate voice range that makes characters less distinct. He tries, it's not a monotone, but very noticeable compared to the first 2 books.
Storywise the author adds backstory recaps with returning characters, stresses out the secretive but blatantly hinted at twist for a character... well, not my favorite.

Historia
In this thrilling supernatural mystery, Sherlock Holmes and Count Dracula must join forces to banish a terrible enemy. Sherlock Holmes is dead. His body lies in a solitary grave on the Sussex Downs, England. But Dr. Watson survives and is now given permission to release tales in Sherlock’s “classified dossier”, those cases that are, dear listener, unbelievable - for their subject matter is of the most outré and grotesque nature.

perfect narrator & compelling plots
Revisado: 03-09-23
The 1rst book was perfect in both plot and in voices. Of the three in the series this one is by far the best. Not storywise, although this one is more british-paced. Absolutely captivating twists that blend the supernatural with Sherlock.
My only complaint of the 2nd and 3rd audible book is the voices. Fun stories at a slightly faster pace, but the narrators subpar after Andrew's performance here.

Not a fan
Revisado: 01-11-23
An alright narrative voice, but the author could polish the story a bit. Because some descriptions of the heros thoughts are copied word for word aloud in the words of others soon afterward. Unnecessary repetition that misses the mark on being either funny or to show a similar history bond.
The story itself was almost fun though. Scenes were interesting enough to keep me listening to an otherwise dull, but crass, hero's inner thoughts.
The hero is a very even keeled, logical young man who definitely notices the physical attributes of the females. Not to mention hangs out with a vocal man-slut (his own description) so while there are no sex scenes be prepared for bits about ass, cleavage and his Mr wiggles sprinkled about.
Good descriptions of fight scenes. And the story plot twists in a way that I still don't know if the supernatural was involved or not. That part was well done. Sadly it's only the last quarter I would think of re-reading again.

hijinks and hiests. Firefly + Stainless Steel Rat!
Revisado: 02-01-22
I love the combined science fiction and fantasy. The writer helped fill in a void he too felt when Firefly stopped. There was comedy woven through action and moral questioning. A joy to listen too.
