Non-Fiction as opposed to Creative Non-Fiction
Revisado: 04-10-17
Would you try another book from Jeffrey Toobin and/or Kevin Stillwell?
Not sure.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The book begins by listing a dozen or so players. Not interesting reading. It then continues with more names. Names of Paula Jones co-workers, family and an army of lawyers, all named. Then there were her hangers-on and a host of new lawyers which must be named. I'm only half way through the book and don't know that I have the fortitude to go on. All reporters have been named, then all the lawyers for Monica, Bill and all his White House staff. All the lawyers for the Star Investigation - named.
He gave us verbatim transcripts of Linda Tripp's phone calls with Monica, one even included all the "um's". Also, he uses verbatim court transcripts. This book is not creative non-fiction.
Could you see A Vast Conspiracy being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I hope not.
Any additional comments?
By the time we got to the Monica part, I didn't care anymore.

Bridge of Spies vividly traces their paths to that electrifying moment on February 10, 1962, when their fates helped to define the conflicts and lethal undercurrents of the most dangerous years of the cold war.

Little Known Story
Revisado: 03-23-17
What did you love best about Bridge of Spies?
It exposed a historical event they didn't teach us in history. Now I know how Gary Powers came to be shot down over Russia and it's importance to prolonging the cold war. Now I know how he was exchanged and that an intrepid reporter scooped the story, and it never got into high school history books.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Gary Powers and his family. Because flawed as they were, they stuck together and supported Gary until his release.
Any additional comments?
If you find history fascinating, you'll enjoy this little-publicized but important chapter from the 1950's.

Interesting but Could Have Seen Shorter
Revisado: 11-01-16
What made the experience of listening to Doomsday Book the most enjoyable?
Going back and forth between the near future and distant past
Would you be willing to try another book from Connie Willis? Why or why not?
Probably not. As an aspiring (unpublished) novelist, she makes mistakes in her craft. She says the same thing exactly, twice in as many paragraphs, she tells us what people are thinking, literally. There is excess, I wish an editor and encouraged her to delete swaths of paragraphs.
The people in this book are the most incompetent scientiests ever. They made Dilbert's bosses seem sane. It defies credulity to believe these people were able to get funding. The only people I had any respect for was the little boy and the woman who went back.
I understand how the circumstances create tension but the circumstances were preposterous.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
My reaction is annoyance. I finished it because I wanted to see how it ended, but it was a slog, even with 125 speed. I bought this because I liked another time travel book of where a young woman was sent to London during the blitz. Now that I think about it, in that book, her handlers were so incompetent that, in the end, they left her there.
Any additional comments?
I know giving negative reviews is mean. So sorry. Maybe I wouldn't have been so annoyed if I had listened at 150 speed.

Entertaining Time Travel Story
Revisado: 03-28-16
What did you love best about The Sapphire Brooch?
Civil War history.
What other book might you compare The Sapphire Brooch to and why?
There is the obvious comparison to the Outlander series with time travel and Scottish accents, but with a fresh take. This book stands on it's own.
Have you listened to any of Teri Schnaubelt’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
The Ruby Brooch. She does a great job with the Scottish accent.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
In the end, I was relieved it was over the resolution was satisfying and brought tears to my eyes. Being on public transportation, at the time, I needed to control myself.
Any additional comments?
The two books in the series conclude nicely. You are not left on a cliff. I listen to all books at 1.25 speed.

The story got up and went nowhere
Revisado: 11-17-15
What disappointed you about The Andromeda Strain?
So much was time date stamp which changed every seven seconds. We have to listen to four or five series of these, with 10 words inbetween. There was so much slooowww dialog. It just dragged. I finally changed the delivery to from 1 to 150 to speed it up to put me out of my misery and get to the end.
Has The Andromeda Strain turned you off from other books in this genre?
I won't listen to any early Michel Crichton again.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I like David Morse's voice. Wonder if he was directed to speak the slow dialog. Even at 150 some of it sounded slow.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Andromeda Strain?
All the time date stamps.

Master of the Senate, told with an abundance of rich detail that could only have come from Caro’s peerless research, is both a galvanizing portrait of the man himself—the titan of Capital Hill, volcanic, mesmerizing—and a definitive and revelatory study of the workings and personal and legislative power.

I had no idea
Revisado: 11-13-13
Where does Master of the Senate rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
I'm a history buff. This book gives a masterful history of the US Senate from the before the Civil War to the years of Lyndon Johnson's work there. At first, I felt annoyed at the length of the overview, then if occurred to me that Mr. Caro was giving the history of a very dysfunctional organization. It showed how Lyndon Johnson slipped into power, using this staggering dysfunction. It was all very interesting.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Master of the Senate?
There isn't really ONE moment. The book illustrates Johnson's breathtaking ruthlessness as a politician.OK, one moment. After WWII 75% of the American people wanted civil rights for blacks in the South. The source for this statistic wasn't cited in the book but there might be a bibliography in the paper book, that sites the source. 75%... and the southern democrats blocked it, wouldn't let it happen, and Lyndon Johnson was one of them. To me, he was not only ruthless, but his action was evil.
Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?
Mr. Gardner has a pleasing tenor voice. I enjoy listening to his narration.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I like absorbing information and stewing in it before going onto the next section. This book is very well researched.
Any additional comments?
If you like history and biography, this book is very well done and very interesting. I've had it for over a year and hadn't gotten around to listening to it. I'm sorry it took me so long.

Danger around every corner
Revisado: 11-05-13
If you could sum up Zoo Station in three words, what would they be?
Playing the angles.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Zoo Station?
John Russell was leaving a brothel after picking up some papers, when a huge nazi entered the alley. Very tense stuff.
What does Simon Prebble bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
His reading shows the integrity and courage of the hero
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
His honesty with his son, while they were visiting England. He explains what he is doing, who he is helping and why. He trusts the relationship with his son, enough to tell him the truth. He told his loved ones the truth, and, in this book it was OK.
Any additional comments?
I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Silly But Didn't Know it.
Revisado: 07-29-13
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
The comings and goings of these characters was ridiculous. I did want to see what happened next so followed to the end. A young man might enjoy this. Maybe I'm just the wrong audience.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
It was appropriate to the rest of the story.
What does Patrick Lawlor and Renee Raudman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
They are professional performers and I always enjoy readers who really know what they are doing. It was good choice to have a man and a woman working on this project. I wish more books were read this way.
Did Breaking the Rules inspire you to do anything?
If someone looks like they need help, as opposed to a handout, I step up and do what I can.
