Historia
Nordland. A region in the Norwegian Arctic; a remote valley that stretches from the sea up to the mountains and the glacier of the Blue Man. It is May. In Nordland it's a time of spring and school-leavers' celebrations - until Daniel, a popular teenage boy, goes missing. Conflicting stories circulate among his friends, of parties and wild behaviour. As the search for Daniel widens, the police open a disused mine in the mountains. They find human remains, but this body has been there for decades, its identity a mystery.

The characters are So believable
Revisado: 04-12-25
I love Stef Penney’s writing.
The characters in this story are so real I can hardly believe they aren’t her actual relatives and friends.
A great read!

Historia
Set in the vibrant fourteenth century of Chaucer and the Black Death, the story features knights fighting in battle, serfs struggling in poverty, and the magnificent Plantagenets—Edward III, the Black Prince, and Richard II—who rule despotically over a court rotten with intrigue. Within this era of danger and romance, John of Gaunt, the king’s son, falls passionately in love with the already-married Katherine. Their affair persists through decades of war, adultery, murder, loneliness, and redemption.

I had never before heard about these WW2 POW Nurses. Such an incredible harrowing true story of survival and endurance. The interweaving of 3 women’s different war time experiences was complex and captivating.

Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

I absolutely loved the heroine’s wise and compassionate observations of
human nature and the glimpse into what 18th century life was like for a woman.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I am in awe. I don’t know how B.K. could have written this story so convincingly from the vantage point of a young boy and his life growing up in Appalachia. But she did and I am so grateful.

Historia
In an Ireland doubly ravaged by war and disease, Nurse Julia Power works at an understaffed hospital in the city center, where expectant mothers who have come down with the terrible new flu are quarantined together. Into Julia's regimented world step two outsiders - Doctor Kathleen Lynn, a rumored Rebel on the run from the police, and a young volunteer helper, Bridie Sweeney. In the darkness and intensity of this tiny ward, over three days, these women change each other's lives in unexpected ways.

Living through a pandemic
Revisado: 07-28-20
What an apropos tale. I thoroughly enjoyed this “slice of life” story about a nurse/midwife working tirelessly during the 1918 Pandemic in Ireland and the laboring women and their babies she helps keep alive.
As a former midwife I loved how detailed the descriptions of the births were. If you are pregnant though this might not be the best book to read just now, as there are a high number of gory birth complications and maternal deaths. The author connects most of these bad outcomes to the terrible malnourishment and dire situation of women living in poverty and the politics and prejudices that keep them there. A fascinating and gripping story.
