Historia
Race and Reunion is a history of how the unity of white America was purchased through the increasing segregation of black and white memory of the Civil War. Blight delves deeply into the shifting meanings of death and sacrifice, Reconstruction, the romanticized South of literature, soldiers' reminiscences of battle, the idea of the Lost Cause, and the ritual of Memorial Day. He resurrects the variety of African-American voices and memories of the war and the efforts to preserve the emancipationist legacy in the midst of a culture built on its denial.

An important look at the period after the war
Revisado: 05-12-23
I have seen some reviews here claiming that this work is anti-Southern. I have found that it is anti Lost Cause, not anti-Southern. It points out how the Lost Cause Myth took hold in much of the country but especially in the South., It also highlights those Southerners that fought against this false revisionism. Overall this period of American history is all too often skipped over (1865-1914). Knowledge of what went on in this period is imperative to understanding how we went from abolition and heading towards equality to the segregation, lynching and mob violence, and neo slavery that have led directly to the current problems that face many black communities. This piece is great contribution to that history. Have bought the print version as well.

Historia
German military history is typically viewed as an inexorable march to the rise of Prussia and the two world wars, the road paved by militarism and the result a specifically German way of war. Peter Wilson challenges this narrative. Looking beyond Prussia to German-speaking Europe across the last five centuries, Wilson finds little unique or preordained in German militarism or warfighting. Iron and Blood takes as its starting point the consolidation of the Holy Roman Empire, which created new mechanisms for raising troops but also for resolving disputes diplomatically.

Revisado: 04-11-23
Great narration. Great overall military history of the German speaking countries from 1500s onwards. In form it jumps around a bit in time periods which might bother some but I thought was ok. Reinforces the fact that we often look at German history with the hindsight of Nazism and the Holocaust and this causes us to draw false equivalence to German history prior to the events, which we should be mindful of. Learned a lot and bought the print copy to study further.

Historia
The 14th century reflects two contradictory images: on the one hand, a glittering time of crusades and castles, cathedrals and chivalry, and the exquisitely decorated Books of Hours; and on the other, a time of ferocity and spiritual agony, a world of chaos and the plague.

overall well presented, some misconceptions
Revisado: 12-14-22
Overall I enjoyed this and learned a lot. While I am far from an expert of this period, however, Tuchman does perpetuate some myths that have been debunked many times over when it comes to the military side of history. For example portraying plate armor as this "iron cocoon" that was more hindrance than it was beneficial, which is wrong. Otherwise great title.

Historia
Two 20th century tyrants stand apart from all the rest in terms of their ruthlessness and the degree to which they changed the world around them. Briefly allies during World War II, Adolph Hitler and Josef Stalin then tried to exterminate each other in sweeping campaigns unlike anything the modern world had ever seen, affecting soldiers and civilians alike. Millions of miles of Eastern Europe were ruined in their fight to the death, millions of lives sacrificed.

Great and in my opinion well balanced
Revisado: 04-20-22
A previous reviewer wrote that this work was biased against Stalin. This is not the case. In fact Rees tells an important but unfortunately all too often forgotten side of Stalins Russia in the war. Crucially, he is also nor an apologist for thr Germans. A couple oft quoted potential myths are recited but altogether this is an excellent work.

Historia
World War II endures in the popular imagination as a heroic struggle between good and evil, with villainous Hitler driving its events. But Hitler was not in power when the conflict erupted in Asia. His armies did not fight in multiple theaters, his empire did not span the Eurasian continent, and he did not inherit any of the spoils of war. That central role belonged to Joseph Stalin. Drawing on ambitious new research in Soviet, European, and US archives, Stalin’s War revolutionizes our understanding of this global conflict by moving its epicenter to the east.

definitely a different take on events that sheds a lot of light on the war and the events that shaped history following it. the less than objective good versus evil narrative of the war which is so standard in histories is absolutely shattered in this work. Although in a few areas I felt that not all sides were considered in forming an opinion, generally I think the author gave a very well rounded account that took into account other explanations for why certain things were done.

Historia
Weimar Germany brings to life an era of unmatched creativity in the 20th century - one whose influence and inspiration still resonate today. Eric Weitz has written the authoritative history that this fascinating and complex period deserves, and he illuminates the uniquely progressive achievements and even greater promise of the Weimar Republic. Weimar Germany also shows that beneath its glossy veneer lay political turmoil that ultimately led to the demise of the republic and the rise of the radical right.

This is a great history of an often overshadowed period in German history. I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn more about the Weimar Republic. Also, the narrator was exceptional, I would definitely put him up there with Grover Gardner for best narrators.

Historia
From Paul Ham, winner of the NSW Premier's Prize for Australian History, comes the story of ordinary men in the grip of a political and military power struggle that determined their fate and has foreshadowed the destiny of the world for a century. Passchendaele epitomises everything that was most terrible about the Western Front. The photographs never sleep of this four-month battle, fought from July to November 1917, the worst year of the war.

Pathos & objectivity?
Revisado: 12-09-20
It is difficult to find a history of The Great War that is objective. I have read and listened to a plethora of work on The Great War, most of them being good histories, however being typical in that they perpetuate myths and legends, over exaggerate certain events without much insight (in order to create a misrepresentation of the truth) and that overall take a biased approach to the war that has been difficult for historians to avoid since allied propaganda (following the great war) and the subsequent atrocities carried out by Germany in the second war. Paul Ham's account of Passchendaele takes a rare objective look into the events surrounding the battle and the war in general. The story of the troops who fought (on both sides) is recounted beautifully and with an absence of bias that is hard to come by. He also dispels many myths and distortions of truth that were created by the Entente during the war for the purpose of propaganda. "Ring of Steel" by Alexander Watson is another great work that I would recommend to someone looking for another angle on the war, as well as a more objective one. I would highly recommend this audiobook as it is well written, full of important details, and narrated well.

Good overall history of the last year
Revisado: 12-05-20
This was a good overall history, however a lot of prior knowledge of the war is needed in order to not be misled. It has the standard biases; it is typically anti German, following the standard allied official view of the war which is typical of the era this was first written. Germany was far from perfect, but there are more objective histories out there that paint a fairer picture. The author also views Douglas Haig in a more favorable light than most. Although Haig has most likely been misunderstood due to the rivalry with DLG, this work is certainly biased for Haig which would give a reader with no prior knowledge a potentially false image. This is, however, to be expected (all authors have their own biases). There are more objective histories of the war out there, but this is a good addittion nonetheless for someone who aöready has prior knowöedge of the war on a military, political, and social level. Also Grover Gardner always does a great job narrating.

In The Third Reich: A History of Nazi Germany, Thomas Childers shows how the young Hitler became passionately political and anti-Semitic as he lived on the margins of society. Fueled by outrage at the punitive terms imposed on Germany by the Versailles Treaty, he found his voice and drew a loyal following.
