I can turn into a housecat. It’s a fun magic, except in a world filled with vampires and werewolves, it doesn’t exactly make me a powerhouse. Instead, the supernatural community has classified me as an outcast, which means one thing: picking on me is open season all day, every day. The local fae are the worst of all, and it’s during one of their regular “capture the cat-girl” sessions that I shift into my cat form and meet HIM for the first time.

Better than the cover art suggests
Revisado: 02-20-25
Based on the bland, cheesy cover art, I was expecting a trashy teen romance, but instead I discovered a book that's been incredibly charming, sweet, well written, & even funny. I can't wait to listen to the next book. The 2 narrators were great too. This is a hard book to dislike!

Historia
The year is 1348. Thomas, a disgraced knight, has found a young girl alone in a dead Norman village. An orphan of the Black Death, and an almost unnerving picture of innocence, she tells Thomas that plague is only part of a larger cataclysm - that the fallen angels under Lucifer are rising in a second war on heaven, and that the world of men has fallen behind the lines of conflict. Is it delirium or is it faith? She believes she has seen the angels of God. She believes the righteous dead speak to her in dreams. And now she has convinced the faithless Thomas to shepherd her across a depraved landscape to Avignon.

Why Did I Love This Book?
Revisado: 12-15-24
Historical fiction/horror is far from my typical genre, but something about this book drew me in & kept hold of me until the very last word. Highly recommended. It is very gruesome, including references to sexual violence, although the little girl is not harmed, & there's a lot of antisemitic & homophobic language, as would have been common in the time & place described. The book itself is not antisemetic or homophobic, however.

The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

A Worthy Followup to the Heartstriker Series
Revisado: 12-05-24
I read "Nice Dragons Finish Last" on a whim, & was excited to discover a fantastic new author with numerous published works to devour. The world building, hard magic systems & characterization in that world are all top notch, & felt fresh & new. The male narrator was also excellent, although he did mispronounce a couple words in each book. I burned through the Heartstriker series in a couple weeks, then hungrily turned to her other books.
I listened to The Legend of Eli Monpress next (it's worth reading for the unique magic system alone), but I didn't feel driven to continue the series. Then I discovered "Minimum Wage Magic" was already in my library, despite no memory of purchasing it. I was elated to discover that this story explores the awakened DFZ, a living city that is both an inscrutible inhuman god, & the ultimate expression of the humanity of her inhabitants.
If you enjoyed the Heartstriker series, I'd definitely give this one a go. The female narrator is just as good, & so far hasn't mispronounced a single word. I enjoyed the unusual take on prophecies & "chosen ones" in the previous series, but it was refreshing to experience a new plot that didn't have every event planned ahead by Bob the slightly mad dragon & his apocalypse pigeon paramour. At least, as far as we know.

The human race is at a crossroads; we know that we are not alone, but details about the alien presence on Earth are still being withheld from the public. As the political climate grows more unstable, the world is forced to consider the ramifications of granting human rights to nonhuman persons. How do you define “person” in the first place?

Enrapturing & Excellent
Revisado: 07-30-22
I've never encountered a story quite this unique; I never knew what to expect, which I really enjoyed. The characters are compelling & believable, & while there are moments that made me laugh, the overall tone is fairly serious, & things get quite dark, including the depictions of PTSD, self-han & explorations of trauma.
My favorite detail was the inclusion of news articles & email correspondences, which injected an added sense of realism & immersion, & I enjoyed that they were narrated by a different voice actor, Abigail Thorn. These books won't be for everyone, but I'd recommend them to any of my friends.

Terrible Voice Actress
Revisado: 08-27-18
I don't know why they chose an elderly woman to read the perspective of a surly teenage girl. The voice actress isn't entirely without talent, & I like the way she does male voices. She might have been a good choice to read a book aimed at younger children. But her voice really, really does not work for this character, & it prevented me from getting into the book.
The plot itself was also far from compelling; yet another YA novel with an unlikable protagonist slogging through a despair-filled dystopian future & pitted against impossible odds. a lot of people clearly enjoyed it, but I'd give it a pass.

Historia
In early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at This American Life, in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan’s story. In 2014, Koenig's investigation turned into Serial, a Peabody Award-winning podcast with more than 500 million international listeners.

The best of both Serial & Undisclosed
Revisado: 08-14-16
I expected this book to be good, having listened with fascination (& frequent fury) to every episode of the Undisclosed podcast, which is hosted by a trio that includes this book's author & narrator, Rabia Chaudry, so I already knew her work, & had high hopes. & "Adnan's Story: The Search for Truth & Justice" still managed to exceed them all.
Like so many others, I raptly absorbed the intriguing, ambiguous, & well-crafted narrative the podcast Serial wove around the investigation of the 1999 murder of 18 year old Hae Min Lee, & the 2000 conviction (recently vacated), of 17 year old Adnan Sayed. I was also fascinated by the deep & detailed active investigations into the minutiae of the physical evidence that featured in the podcast Undisclosed, & a spin-off, Truth & Justice (formerly named Serial Dynasty). But "Adnan's Story" masterfully & seamlessly blends the best of both of these ground-breaking podcasts into a truly excellent book. The story is extremely compelling, & the extensive investigative evidence is laid out in a clear & logical manner, making it easy to follow as the plot progresses, even for those listeners who may never have heard of Serial, Undisclosed, or even podcasts. & if you've listened to them all, this book cont behind-the-scenes interactions & drama that never made it onto the podcasts.

Women rule the world in this suspenseful love story set in a post-nuclear future. Having expelled men from their vast walled cities to a lower-class wilderness, the women in this futuristic universe dictate policy and chart the future through control of scientific and technological advances. Among their laws are the rules for reproductive engagement, an act now viewed as a means of procreation rather than an act of love.

Fantastic Science Fiction Novel
Revisado: 03-17-16
I had a hard time remembering over the several days I spent absorbing this tale that it was fictional, that this wasn't the story of immutable events that had really happened, & not a finely & deliberately crafted novel. It was gripping & compelling & utterly believably real. I would recommend this book to anyone who can read, or listen, & who loves great stories of any genre. I never got bored, or needed a break, & I spent the time I wasnt listening to the story thinking about the story. I couldn't do otherwise. The voice acting from Jefferson Mays was also some of the best I've ever heard. Each voice was distinct, natural, seamless.
