Historia
Turning the other cheek does not mean standing by while the enemies of God dismantle Christian civilization and brainwash our children. Decrying the cowardice that masquerades as meekness, Eric Metaxas summons the Church to battle. An attenuated and unbiblical “faith” based on what Bonhoeffer called “cheap grace” has sapped the spiritual vitality of millions of Americans. Paying lip service to an insipid “evangelism,” they shrink from combating the evils of our time. Metaxas refutes the pernicious lie that fighting evil politicizes Christianity.

timely and challening
Revisado: 11-09-22
this book says what needs to be said to the American church today. it even brings it down to the personal level at the very end. doesn't go on longer than it needs to and makes a compelling point about the weakness of faith without action. the narration was a bit slow and choppy as noted here elsewhere but I found by listening to it at 1.5 x it sounded just fine, like natural speech.

Historia
Herman Melville’s tale of corporate discontent, Bartleby, the Scrivener, tells the story of a quiet, hardworking legal copyist who works in an office in the Wall Street area of New York City. The business where he works handles the official financial paperwork of wealthy men. One day, Bartleby’s employer requests he proofread one of the documents he has copied. Bartleby declines the assignment with the inscrutable “I would prefer not,” the first of what will become many refusals.

a gripping read
Revisado: 04-24-22
Just as the narrator cannot seem to tear himself away from his relationship with Bartleby, readers of this story will feel similarly engaged by this mysterious and pitiful character. With the rise of anxiety and depression among young people today, this story is eerily contemporary. The narrator's unfailing kindness and charity are a fitting model for those who who suffer with and try to help friends or family members struggling with mental illness. In addition, the story is a rare glimpse at the business world from the employer's perspective . There is much familiar to any owner or manager in the colorful characters the narrator employs. But even read simply as literature, Melville is a master storyteller who can be witty, then serious, then humorous, then deeply philosophical. His grasp of the language makes it clear why he is such a giant of American literature. Since most of us will never read Moby Dick, this story will serve to demonstrate Melville's genius. Truly one of the great short stories.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

Historia
A serious attack against Christianity by well-known newspaper editor Robert Blatchford in 1903 impelled Chesterton to seize the gauntlet of refutation. His reply was immensely successful and was the early formation of his convincing credo that is so brilliantly and cogently argued in Orthodoxy, a masterwork that was published just five years later.

excellent narration of a mind blowing book
Revisado: 07-23-20
a stunning tour de force in defense of traditional Christian world view. while few critics of Christianity will be open minded enough to be converted by this book, some may have the intellectual honesty to admit that these are compelling arguments. that's exactly what happened to CS Lewis who credits the reading of this book with starting his conversion. more importantly, Christians should read the this book to have their views confirmed with the conviction that Christianity is not only the most rational option, but the most playful, romantic and meaningful way to live your life. No defense of any contemporary secular ideology could be this much fun or this personally moving. this narrator is excellent, and the most professional in my opinion.

Historia
The Story of a Soul conveys St. Therese of Lisieux's "Little Way" of spiritual childhood - her "elevator" to Heaven, as she called it. This method was approved by Pope Pius XI as a way for all to grow in holiness through unfailing confidence and childlike delight in God's merciful love. Again and again in this audiobook, St. Therese shows us how her "Little Way" of love and trust comes straight from Sacred Scripture.

spiritual classic that deserves its reputation
Revisado: 05-22-20
the simplicity of St. Therese is unique and irresistible. I enjoy reading Aquinas, et. al so I was skeptical -- worried this would be too saccharine, but it's not. now I see why she was made a doctor of the church. The narrator does an excellent job of conveying the innocence and simplicity of the saint. a great book.

Historia
Anne Catherine Emmerich was born in Germany in 1774. As a child she believed that angels, saints, and the Holy Family visited and talked with her as she worked in the fields. At twenty-four, she had her first mystic vision of the sufferings of Christ, accompanied by stigmata and bleeding as if from the crown of thorns. At twenty-nine, she became an Augustinian nun and continued to have visions and stigmata. In her visions, she recounted scenes from the life of Christ, which she seemed to have witnessed.

Thought provoking and worthwhile
Revisado: 04-13-20
it's hard to keep in mind that this is not infallible revelation or an eyewitness account of the passion. The translation and the narrator combine to make it read like a simple English peasant lady relating her experiences down at the market one day (even though it was written in German by an educated German mystic). The details are so realistic and the events are related in such a way as to bring a real human touch to the Gospel narratives which are sparse and officious by comparison. But if it's not true revelation or an eyewitness account what good is it? There is much to be gained from this book. It is very helpful in bringing the story to a touching level of human connection. It makes the Gospel narration much more realistic and much more believable by filling in the details and the almost embarrassing human nature displayed by all the characters. The day of Christ's resurrection, for example, was a chaotic mess. Of course it was! it had to have been, but I never realized it before. there are many moments of insight like that. It is a worthwhile read.
