Historia
Julián Luna has a plan for his life: Graduate. Get into UCLA. And have the chance to move away from Corpus Christi, Texas, and the suffocating expectations of others that have forced Jules into an inauthentic life. Then in one reckless moment, with one impulsive tweet, his plans for a low-key nine months are thrown - literally - out the closet. The downside: the whole world knows, and Jules has to prepare for rejection. The upside: Jules now has the opportunity to be his real self. Then Mat, a cute, empathetic Twitter crush from Los Angeles, slides into Jules’s DMs.

Queer Mary Sue, I mean, Julián
Revisado: 03-22-23
I gave this book a fair go, I was waiting for the conflict, the drama. Then the book was over. I’d say the ending failed to tie up loose ends but that would imply there was anything interesting that needed resolution.
The depiction of the father character’s suspicions regarding his son’s sexuality was a yo-yo of being trivialized then exploited for tension. I do not recommend this book if you value your time.

Not an audio-book
Revisado: 10-06-22
This is hardly a book, the included sound effects and music make it hardly different from watching the show. To call this an adaptation is overstating the effort. The only reason I recommend this at all is because there is content and information about the story that is not available in the TV series.

Historia
A notorious white supremacist named Richard Barrett was brutally murdered in Mississippi in 2010 by a young Black man named Vincent McGee. At first the murder seemed a twist on old Deep South race crimes. But then new revelations and complications came to light. Maybe it was a dispute over money rather than race - or, maybe and intriguingly, over sex.

Safran’s most entertaining work.
Revisado: 04-25-22
I listened to a friend of mine reading excerpts from this book when it came out and it sounded intriguing. I never ended up figuring out what it was he was reading back then and I’m quite glad to find this here.
Bromhead really brings to life Safran’s work with his expressiveness.

Average
Revisado: 03-02-22
The narrator had flaws, but other reviewers have dwelled on this for far too long already.
The story is frustrating. It feels like it could, with work, be fun and exciting. The magic system isn’t done well and isn’t interesting enough, the time travel is as bad as most time travel, and the politics of the gangs and the “order” have little to no intrigue.

Subverts All Expectations
Revisado: 02-19-22
I realized a few chapters in that I wasn’t really enjoying this book. “Darkness” and “Light” fighting eachother in an epoch? There’s no way I’ll appreciate this. I’ve never been a fan of good vs evil stories that have to label who the baddies are.
I was wrong. This story takes every expectation and twists down unexpected alleyways and corridors. I’ve not felt a YA novel to be so fantastically brilliant since Keys to the Kingdom by Garth Nix.
I look forward to hearing more stories from this author.

Historia
Arthur is only in New York for the summer, but if Broadway has taught him anything, it’s that the universe can deliver a showstopping romance when you least expect it. Ben thinks the universe needs to mind its business. If the universe had his back, he wouldn’t be on his way to the post office carrying a box of his ex-boyfriend’s things. But when Arthur and Ben meet-cute at the post office, what exactly does the universe have in store for them? Maybe nothing. After all, they get separated. Maybe everything. After all, they get reunited.

I don’t care about Hamilton. It was good though.
Revisado: 02-17-22
There were far too many instances of discussing Harry Potter, Hamilton the musical, and other works that inspired the deuteragonist.
I’m not too familiar with the city but I did grow up in Upstate NY. I was excited because I thought this work would be more relatable but I suppose the city really is its own world down there. It’s really sweet to see the unlikely story unfold. I was impressed overall, I do think the side characters are far more interesting than our main ones. Dylan, Julie, and Namrata in particular were very fun and I felt like with lots of the supporting cast I’d be quite interested in hearing more about the lives of these New Yorkers.
I was pleased with the conclusion, keeping realism and focusing on how the events of the novel impacted the characters makes for a more fulfilling and profound conclusion then an unlikely idealized ending I’d have expected from a romance novel.
Oh speaking of which, this is my first. I’ve never read this sortof novel before, and I was surprised they aren’t as steamy as I expected.

Historia
In this deeply scary and intensely unnerving debut novel, Jake and a woman known only as "The Girlfriend" are on a drive to visit his parents at their secluded farm. But when Jake leaves "The Girlfriend" stranded at an abandoned high school, what follows is a twisted unraveling of the darkest unease, an exploration into psychological frailty, and an ending as suspenseful as The Usual Suspects and as haunting as Misery.

An interesting thriller unravels into a mess.
Revisado: 11-22-21
This story kicks off at a reasonable pace with interesting character dynamics, the relationship between the protagonist and the love interest has a solid gripping hook. It heightens into a fascinating thriller with a truly horrifying meeting the parents set in an old farmhouse. The pacing then goes off key with a drudging trip back home in the snow with a stop at dairy queen and a frustrating sequence in a school that ends with an entirely unsatisfying reveal both cliché and poorly executed.
I would recommend this book to people who don’t need a satisfying ending. The first 18 or so chapters, at least before they enter the school have some of the most gripping and thrilling story I’ve come across.
I chose this rating because in the words of Robert McKee “You can have an uninvolving, tedious (movie). But wow them in the end, and you’ve got a hit.”
For me the ending was so much of a let down that I cannot help but feel the work fails to deliver on its key promises and themes. If anything it’s the opposite. I was impressed right up until the end.
