Historia
Words like unnatural and impure started the whispers. From the very beginning, Ivy Blackwood was different. She was only a child when she was accused of setting the fire, one she passively watched engulf the small house she had called home. Her fingertips burned, and her hair singed. Some who watched her crossed themselves, convinced she was soulless for she showed no emotion at all. Calm and dispassionate, even when the screaming started that quickly turned to bellows of agony before dying into nothing but the roaring of the fire.

Promising start, the it fell apart after that
Revisado: 12-21-18
This book completely gripped me in the beginning. I actually had a hard time doing anything else while listening to the first third of the book, which is rare for me since I am a huge multitasker. Aaron Shedlock's voice was PERFECT for this role. Absolutely perfect. My heart was racing through some of the moments at the beginning. But, after the first third or so, I began to lose interest and by the halfway mark, I was honestly struggling with the book.
The cover and blurb led me to believe I would be listening to a suspense book. For the first third or so, I did feel that way. But after that, it felt like I had fallen into a YA novel. The writing style changed, which meant the characters did too, and I just had a hard time staying with it. My biggest thing is, I did not find Ivy a believable character. I understand she was locked away and kept under a spell for a long time, but as soon as she is free of that, she starts acting like a 17-year-old, when she is 32. Gushing over clothes, drooling over hamburgers, and lusting over guys lips. I understand it, with the new found freedom. But, when she doesn't know desire in her body at 32 years old, you kind of lose me. Even locked up, I think she'd know. And, I didn't believe for a second that she didn't know what a phone was. She was ten when she was captured. It was things like this that just made her feel immature and naive, so I completely lost my connection to Ivy in these chapters, which was sad since I felt her SO strongly in the beginning. I do believe part of that is Tracy Marks for me. She is a phenomenal narrator, even in this book, but she does naturally sound young, which only added to that YA-feel I struggled with.
This book started out incredibly strong and I was really pulling for Ivy. Unfortunately, once I lost that connection, I never got it back. I hate to say it, but I did not enjoy this book.

Made me stop in my tracks at the grocery store!
Revisado: 09-01-17
That moment when the salesman taps you on the arm and asks you if you need help, and you suddenly realize you have been standing in front of the ketchup at the grocery store for over 15 minutes, barely able to breathe, simply from a fight scene in a book. Yeah.... That happened...
I really enjoyed this! Will definitely continue with the series.

Another epic Dannika Dark book
Revisado: 08-02-17
Dannika Dark is one of my one-click authors. I rarely read what her books are about before diving in, but I always buy them on audio because Nicole Poole manages to bring the books to life in a way very few other narrators can. She is simply brilliant. Keystone is no exception. There were so many accents, so many emotions, and conflicts, and all of it was done perfectly... I was completely enthralled with this. Christian Poe's voice fit him perfectly, as did Niko's. I liked Raven, as I usually do with all the female leads in DD's books. She writes them "real", with faults and real emotions and struggles. Raven touched me, though, because even though she was dirt poor and homeless, she still didn't cling to Keystone as her only option. She was brave enough to consider her heart first, even if it meant giving up food and shelter. I appreciate that. Because I've already read all of Dannika's other books, I was already familiar with much of the "Breed World", but this took it even further. I loved having shifters, vampires, grave walkers, etc all in one book, so closely together. I've already DL'ed book 2, and am anxious for book 3 as well. Well done, Dannika Dark and Nicole Poole, you've captivated me once again.

Fun story, great narration
Revisado: 07-23-17
Oh, high school. The drama! This was a fun story, and I liked the characters. They felt real to me, and not forced together like some stories. Ethan is a stud, if only all guys were that sweet and caring in high school. Ella was likeable, and I loved her independent spirit. I loved to hate the villian/Kennedy, LOL. I almost didn't like the last scene with her, because my emotions were already tied up so much in one way toward her, I didn't want that to change. Ha!
I enjoyed the narrator, and appreciated that she used a different narrative voice for the male/female leads. It made it easy and more real to listen to. She did a great job. I plan to look up more of her books. .

Overcoming miscommunications
Revisado: 11-29-16
I loved watching Jericho grow up and accept his deep rooted love for Izzy in this book. The chemistry between characters was real and tangible, and unavoidable. My heart broke when they miscommunicated, but I cheered them on as they worked through their emotions, too. I really enjoy this series. It is written beautifully and narrated so well, too. I love the pack dynamic... I want to go play laser tag and eat nachos with these guys! :)

Sound technicalities, but good conclusion!
Revisado: 11-29-16
I loved the first three books, and I was both excited and dreading the conclusion. It's always like that with a good series! This did not disappoint. All the tension, all the questions, all the unknowns are finally clicking into place. It felt like a good closing to a fast paced, action filled, heartache enduring story. Well done. I love the characters in this series, every one of them! The relationship between Ryker and Zoey feels real, with ups and downs and frustrations. It wasn't the average love at first sight, too, which was refreshing. Kroygen (not sure how you spell his name) and Sprig's banter was hilarious. Speaking of Sprig, he is the absolute best! I adored him. I was a honey-loving sprite monkey! The voices Amy Landon did for each character fit them well, but the one she did for Sprig was PERFECT.
There was some voice technicalities in this book, at times it would switch and sound a little echo-y. It was less in the last half of the book, but definitely noticeable in the first half. That said, it didn't annoy me enough to shut off the story at any time. Just a heads up in case that kind of stuff bugs you. :)

Room for improvement... both the story & narration
Revisado: 11-15-16
This book was not for me. I felt there was room for improvement in the writing. The story seemed to be okay, but the characters names were used too often where pronouns would have sufficed. So while the story felt okay, it was distracting and repetitive hearing "Carli this and then Carli that". Then, the story was paired with a narrator who was much too young to be a 50 year old character. I think with practice she will become a good narrator, but for this story, she felt very flat/monotone and left the story dry. Character voices were not emphasized and emotions were not felt. Actions felt empty, even during tense scenes. Lastly, the editing was... odd. It was almost rushed or forced to fit in a certain amount of time. The sentences were clipped in the way that it almost felt some sentences were overlapped. I don't think words were left out, but it felt like there was NO break between the end of one sentence and the beginning of the next. It happened frequently, so it was distracting and unpleasant. All that said... while I did not love this story, I did not hate it it either because I do see potential in both author and narrator.

Least favorite of series - because of April’s voice
Revisado: 10-25-16
Nicole Poole is amazing and absolutely a favorite narrator of mine. I love that she can do different narrative voices, which works well in a series like this where it’s from a different person each time. It helps that we truly get a sense of a new character in each book. However, every time I relisten to this series (which has been several times now), the high-pitched narrative voice used for April just… grates on me. It gives me a headache by the end. It makes whiny-April even more whiny. April in general just drives me batty. Her naivety and woe is me is just too much sometimes, plus her decisions make want to scream. I am always tempted to skip this book in the series but listen solely because of Trevor. He is not the love interest, yet he is a huge favorite character of mine and I love being reintroduced to him. Some of my absolute favorite moments in the series involve him, and one of them is in this book, so I always feel I have to relisten. The things he goes through… gah. I just love him and wanna wrap my arms around him. But otherwise, this is definitely my least favorite of an otherwise amazing series.

HORRIBLE narrator!! Made me return the book
Revisado: 10-06-16
I have a rule. Give the narrator one hour so they can relax into their role. Ittook everything in me to stick to that with this book, because within that one hour, I cringed over a dozen times and paused it twice. It wasn't the writing... that actually was already interesting to me. It was the narrator. She is dreadful. She slips into this nasally tone frequently, often mid-sentence that makes it sound like the characters are being strangled. Needless to say, I returned this book... and I never return books. I've heard so many good things about this series, so I'll pick up a paperback copy instead. Do not waste your time on this!
