I enjoyed the book, as always. Not a fan of the Corey and Felder novellas stuck into the novel. It was awkwardly done

Do the editors actually LISTEN to the recordings?
Revisado: 01-10-23
I have been a huge Pendergast fan for decades. And I have been an Audible listener almost as long. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration. He gives Pendergast a lot of depth that none of the others have. But 12 times that I counted, parts of the text were repeated like on an old scratched LP. Most of the time, it was just a few lines, sometimes, whole paragraphs. Get it together people.

Historia
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Corrie Swanson is assigned what seems to her a throwaway case: to ID the body and determine cause of death. She brings archaeologist Nora Kelly to excavate the body and lend her expertise to the investigation, and together they uncover something unexpected and shocking: the deceased apparently died in agony, in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, with a rictus of horror frozen on his face. Hidden on the corpse lies a 16th-century Spanish gold cross.

Great book, horrid narration
Revisado: 02-14-21
The narrator's butchering of the pronunciation of common Southwestern words was bad enough to make listening annoying & painful. And for God's sake, Pendergast a New Orleans gentleman, not a cheesy posh Brit wannabe. PLEASE find a narrator worthy of the material for any further Swanson/Kelly books.

Historia
Nora Kelly, a young curator at the Santa Fe Institute of Archaeology, is approached by historian Clive Benton with a once-in-a-lifetime proposal: to lead a team in search of the so-called "Lost Camp" of the tragic Donner Party. Benton tells Kelly he has stumbled upon an amazing find: the long-sought diary of one of the victims, which has an enigmatic description of the Lost Camp. Nora agrees to lead an expedition to locate and excavate it-to reveal its long-buried secrets. Once in the mountains, they learn that discovering the camp is only the first step in a mounting journey of fear.

British accent? Really?
Revisado: 12-23-19
I understand that the narrator can't portray Pendergast as Scott Brick or René Auberjonois, may he rest in peace, did. But you'd think she could at least place his accent on the right continent. The editor or publisher must surely provide narrators with a thumbnail history of any characters who have previously appeared in the work of an author. The fact that Pendergast is a native of New Orleans and not Newgate MUST have come up!
The story itself was pure Lincoln/Child. Not their best, but not their worst, either. I like finding out what happened to Nora after Bill's death. I had wondered about her. I sort of miss Corie's piss and vinegar attitude and mouth but I guess even fictional characters have to grow up sometime.
As much as I look forward to Nora & Corie working together in the future, I really miss the old Pendergast & D'Agosta pair ups.

Revisado: 05-10-17
The novel itself is an interesting beginning of a new series. Not great, but good enough to bring me back to see what happens next.
The real star, however, is the phenomenal Davina Porter. I swear this woman could read the telephone book and make it great literature.

Has this author ever BEEN to East Texas?
Revisado: 03-01-15
It's cheesy and the dialogue is stiff and unrealistic. If the author has ever even flown over Houston, I'll kiss his Stetson. Basements? Really? Admittedly, there are some, but they are VERY few and VERY far between. And since when has the wind in Houston in June been crisp?
