Slow to start... but good once gets going.
Revisado: 03-21-17
The first act is boring and slow, the second act is predictable but the third is really good and satisfying. It was worth it in the end.

Historia
In 1978, Warren Fellows was convicted of heroin trafficking between Thailand and Australia. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the notorious Bang Kwang prison - better known as the Bangkok Hilton. It was the beginning of 12 years of hell in a place where sewer rats and cockroaches are the only nutritious food, where prison guards laugh as they deliver pulverising blows, and where the worst punishment is the khun deo - solitary confinement, Thai style.

I thought an audio book could not really communicate the horror but the writer does an amazing job. what it lacks in literary qualities it makes the book seem more real and written with more honestly .

Ever wondered why the gap between rich and poor nations is so great, or why it's so difficult getting a foot on the property ladder, or how to outwit Starbucks? This audiobook offers the hidden story behind these and other questions, as economist Tim Harford reveals how supermarkets, airlines, and coffee chains, to name just a few, are vacuuming money from our wallets.

I learnt a lot and a great insight although the idea of income is never really discussed. the author has a bit too much faith in the free market economy.

Historia
"While the history books are filled with tales of obsessive visionary geniuses who remade the world in their images with sheer, almost irrational force, I've found that history is also made by individuals who fought their egos at every turn, who eschewed the spotlight, and who put their higher goals above their desire for recognition." This book is a lie.
Revisado: 08-25-16
Any additional comments?
Ego Is The Enemy, is what we want to hear but it is not the truth. The author gives us many examples of people who he deems as successful, which I have never heard of, while lambasting people who we would all regard as successful, as hollow success stories.
What the author does here is redefine the meaning of ‘success’ as someone who ‘works hard’ and then continues to point out all these people who work hard and are a success as proof of his argument. Many people who you and I would deem as successful are ignored here as according to Ryan Holiday they are considered to be not a true success, yet many unknown army generals are a true success in his eyes. Therefore the book is simply a lie, it’s a narrative that we all would love to believe is true (especially millennials) but it’s not. Just look at the rich and famous people of this world, compare that to all the nurses and cleaners.
I think Ryan Holiday cheats us a bit here. I think he thought up a narrative that we all wanted to hear and proceeded to squeeze the square peg in a round hole. He should write fiction.

The Overlords appeared suddenly over every city - intellectually, technologically, and militarily superior to humankind. Benevolent, they made few demands: unify earth, eliminate poverty, and end war. With little rebellion, humankind agreed, and a golden age began.

Great sci fi
Revisado: 08-24-16
I have had some bad luck with science fiction lately with stories where the writer cannot even imagine a future without war let alone a positive distant future. I was about to give up on the genre altogether until I listened to this.
I really recommend it. it's hard to believe it was written so long ago, besides some racial observations the book is timeless.

Seems like part of a greater world
Revisado: 09-30-15
The story is just ok, it seems like, and may well be, part of a greater story but as a stand alone book it was a lot about nothing.
I had a lot of problems with the narrator who seemed like she was reading a list. Each sentence exactly the same tone. I found it to distracting. I never usually care about the narrator but this is the first book I have ever had real problems with in listening. Although it's great to hear a woman narrator her performance was robotic.

It's about nothing...
Revisado: 09-15-15
It's ok. The performance is very entertaining but the book itself is filled with name dropping and self important drivel. Is she the only person who has ever worked hard? At one moment she talks about visiting Haiti and I realised I could be listening to a book about real people with real stories.
It seems like a thrown together mess so she can make a quick buck. But she makes up for it by reading it her self and neon very entertaining.

Historia
In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition - the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right.

I enjoyed most of this book and ha great moments of insight that I want to listen to it again.
I recommend listeners to wait though and not jump to conclusions as most topics get explained further as the book goes on.

Historia
The life and death of Jim Jones and his followers in Jonestown still mystifies people to this day. "Drinking the Kool-Aid" became a famous metaphor for holding an unquestioned belief without critical examination. But was there a far more sinister play at hand than the official story revealed? This audiobook is a complete history of Jim Jones and People's Temple, with further analysis on what might have been the real cause of this tragedy.

A lot of what and not much why.
Revisado: 06-09-15
The book chronicles the events but never really explains why people behave that way. Not much thought is put into it besides the fantastic amount of research. The takes a bit of a conspiracy theory twist, which seems too reaching after what we just listened to.

My new favorite book
Revisado: 05-01-14
Where does Guns, Germs and Steel rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Wow, this is a great book. The understanding of deep time and the authors real experiences splashed in to add colour. There is so much amazing information which has made me the life of dinner party conversation as I spout bits of knowledge from this great book.
What other book might you compare Guns, Germs and Steel to and why?
This book is a primer for understanding our world, breaking down racism, western superiority even understanding our natural environment. It covers the whole path of humanity and dispels common myths... just download it.
What does Doug Ordunio bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
The performance is good, although the topic is great I didn't quite notice the performance, or maybe that is the mark of a great performance?
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
There are moments of aha! When you a realise that our world, is the way it is, not through design but through circumstance. It’s quite fast paced, and one of the few books that I didn’t tune out for a minute or two.
Any additional comments?
This is great it should be required reading in schools, universities, churches even the bus.
