I enjoyed learning about Penny’s many accomplishments. I had no idea, before listening to the book, that she had accomplished so much and was such an outgoing and giving person.

Historia
So begins Chloé Cooper Jones’s bold, revealing account of moving through the world in a body that looks different than most. Jones learned early on to factor “pain calculations” into every plan, every situation. Born with a rare congenital condition called sacral agenesis which affects both her stature and gait, her pain is physical. But there is also the pain of being judged and pitied for her appearance, of being dismissed as “less than.”

Insightful
Revisado: 11-18-24
Chloe Cooper Jones expressed her thoughts and experiences in a meaningful way without trying to sugar coat anything. Whether it was herself or other people under the microscope, she was forthright in expressing her feelings in a way that came across as impartial and fair and often very poignant.

Historia
Christine discovered long distance backpacking while surfing the internet at work. She decided that day to attempt to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail. One adventure led to another and a few years later she set out on the Wonderland Trail in Mt Rainier National Park. Her Rugged Outdoors Woman persona started as a joke, a nod to the outdoor adventurer that she wished to be. But in the years since, she has come into her own as a backpacker, rock climber, and trail runner. This book is a testament to the decision to name who you want to be and make it so.

Enjoyable
Revisado: 11-12-24
I love books about adventure, personal growth and introspection. Also, I prefer books that are read by the author. So many narrators seem to just be reading the words and having a pleasing voice is not nearly as important to me as hearing from someone who has actually lived the experience.

Complicated
Revisado: 07-18-24
I was never quite sure of what to make of it, but I found it quite touching at times. I kept listening because I wanted to see where it was going and how the story as a whole would affect me. It was unique and I doubt I’ll ever forget it. I really liked the narration. I am very picky when it comes to narrators and I thought this one was pretty close to perfect.

Historia
At 57, Kathy has chosen comfort over hardship: she and Jim get to indulge in warm beds and delicious regional food every night and croissants in the mornings. But the GR5 is not all comfort. Walking day after day for 98 days brings sickness, accommodation struggles, language barriers, and storm-shrouded mountains in the Alps. As the days unfold, however, she discovers her own wise strength and comes to the gratifying realization that a long marriage is like a long trail: there are ups and downs and it takes hard work to keep going, but the beauty along the way is staggering.

Historia
The oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare look at her father on the centennial of his birth in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative memoir. The composer of On the Town and West Side Story, chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic, television star, humanitarian, friend of the powerful and influential, and the life of every party, Leonard Bernstein was an enormous celebrity during one of the headiest periods of American cultural life, as well as the most protean musician in 20th-century America.

I enjoyed learning more about Leonard Bernstein from someone who knew him best. I love that Jamie did the narration. I don’t think I’ve ever heard such a lively narration and although I sometimes wished she would tone it down a bit, I couldn’t quit listening. I was touched by her enthusiasm and genuine expressions of love for her complicated father and his music.

Tedious
Revisado: 12-22-23
Maybe I was expecting too much because of all the hype. I couldn’t relate to the characters. They didn’t ring true to me and their insights into themselves and the world felt pretentious. I wanted to listen to the whole book, but I just couldn’t muster the patience to do so. I prefer non-fiction to fiction and often find it difficult to suspend my disbelief when it comes to seeing fictional characters as actual human beings, especially when their lives are so far removed from my own.

Average
Revisado: 12-17-23
Although this book is important in that it documents the perils of drug addiction, the author came across as glib and vulgar, especially when referring to women. Oh, and by the way, lots of incredibly gorgeous, brilliant and amazing women were drawn to him time and time again. They were way too gorgeous for him, he humble brags. The narrator had a nice voice but sounded very cheery and blasé despite the fact that his life was going to hell. If the author actually had sober moments, I didn’t pick that up from the narration. I seldom like audible biographies not narrated by the author. Too often, the narrator is just reading a story (careful not to use a droning monotone) but without the feelings that should go with the words.
