Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Loved the style of the performance and the performers. Some parts were a tiny bit hard to hear but mostly awesome.

Historia
Boudica, second daughter of a Celtic king, has little concern for tribal tensions and political intrigues. Called by the gods and the stirrings of her own wild heart, she listens instead to whispers of the oaks. But Boudica would be wiser to heed the warning cries of eagles. Rumors abound that the Romans are amassing forces for another invasion. In an effort to consolidate power, Boudica’s father turns to Prasutagus, the formidable ruler of the Greater Iceni. To win Prasutagus’s aid, Boudica’s father must strike a bargain - a deal with implications beyond Boudica’s imagining.

Voice work wasn’t grating

I’m going to try reading the book instead. The way the narrator interprets the characters is so annoying I can’t stand to listen any longer. Hoping the actual read is better.

Historia
Late Victorian London. When James Miller, the most respectable of Scottish businessmen, is pulled, dead, from the Thames, his daughter is drawn into an investigation which reveals a whole world of secrets and corruption. Alongside local detective Culley, Catriona’s search for her father’s killer leads all the way to the tragic truth behind the ghostly legend of The Darkwater Bride and the power of her deadly kiss. The Darkwater Bride combines the genres of the Victorian mystery thriller with the equally classic Victorian mode of the ghostly tale.

Needs a very strong trigger warning!
Revisado: 07-09-24
Don’t get me wrong. The story was intriguing and compelling. The performances were great AND there are graphic depictions of violence and sexual violence against women. The depictions were made even worse due to the fact that instead of merely being read, they are being acted out. Sounds of women beating slapped and hit, sounds of women crying and screaming. Not a good thing to walk into unaware.

Fantastic!

Best read I’ve had in a long while. Intriguing plot, lots of twists and turns. If you love missing person/mystery this is a great book.
There were definitely places where you could tell the narrator is Australian reading with an American accent but it didn’t detract from the story.

Not her usual

Loved the plot twist but…
Much of the book is taken up by hard, depressing stuff. Nothing wrong with that per se but not what read this type of book for.

Scotland, 1026 - Gruoch, descendant of the line of MacAlpin, should have been born into a life of ease. But fate is fickle. Her father's untimely death, rumored to have been plotted by King Malcolm, leaves her future uncertain and stained by the prophecy that she will avenge her family line. Escaping to one of the last strongholds of the old Celtic gods, Gruoch becomes an adept in arcane craft. Her encounters with the otherworld, however, suggest that magic runs stronger in Scotland than she ever imagined.

Painful at times
Revisado: 01-31-22
The story jumped around in ways that lost and frustrated me rather than pulled me in. The sex scenes were flat, feeling like an editor told the writer to expand on them a bit and so trite phrases from 70’s romance novels were sprinkled in. It would have worked if they touched on but no attempt for detail was made. Outside of this, it’s a fascinating premise with a lot of promise that kept me engaged enough to finish the book.

Entertaining and captivating
Revisado: 03-17-21
A beautifully narrated story that captivates and makes you want more. There are a few cheesy moments but overall the writing is imaginative and bright ( the variety in the descriptions for the same sensation of recognition of intuition were impressive! )

Imagine a world where.... Everything you ate was monitored by the government. Every step you took was counted. Your children were weighed every day at school. Neighbours reported on neighbours and no one was safe from judgement. Sugar was illegal, and baking was a crime. Imagine if that world was here.... What would you do? Toe the line or fight for your freedom....
