Historia
Despite billions of dollars invested in medical research and technological breakthroughs in American healthcare made to prolong and improve the lives of patients, a devastating statistic remains. Two thirds of Americans die in healthcare institutions tethered to machines and tubes at bankrupting costs, despite research that shows 80 percent of Americans would prefer to spend their last days in their homes surrounded by loved ones.

Every physician should read this
- De Kristin en 12-17-16
This should be required reading
Revisado: 08-24-22
Just because we can, doesn't mean we should. I am overjoyed that this subject has been so well presented with honesty and compassion. After watching my first code blue as a new nurse, and then learning about the subsequent statistics related to outcomes for patients who are coded, I have advocated for this type of information for the public.
After working 42 years as a nurse, I learned that it's not just the elderly that should be having these discussions. Sadly, every day decisions have to be made by family members for young accident victims, end stage cancer patients who are facing their early mortality.
Thank you, Dr. Angelo Volandes. You have my utmost respect and gratitude. RC, RN

Tunnel 29
Revisado: 11-22-21
I was 5 in 1961. I remember talk of Sputnik and having air raid drills in school. The Berlin wall always seemed to exist in my childhood, until it was taken down. I was an adult with children then. I understood more about freedom and oppression. This history lesson adds depth and the humanity of another atrocity of war. I am grateful to the author for bringing this story to long overdue light.

Historia
The mystery of Elizabeth Keane's father is one that has never been solved by the people of Buncarragh - not for lack of speculation. Her mother, Patricia, had been assumed a spinster until she began dating a mysterious man from out of town and within months had left Buncarragh and had married. Less than two years later, Patricia was back, with a new baby in her arms but no new husband by her side and unbendingly silent about her recent past. A secret she would take with her to her grave.

Man of surprises
Revisado: 11-05-18
I only knew Graham Norton as the well dressed, slightly naughty, and delightfully funny talk show host.
I should not have been surprised that he could weave a tale with nice plot twists, endearing (ok, one was bat shit crazy) characters. Great narration, hearing his brogue takes me back to Belfast. Nicely done

Historia
When Michael Pollan set out to research how LSD and psilocybin (the active ingredient in magic mushrooms) are being used to provide relief to people suffering from difficult-to-treat conditions such as depression, addiction, and anxiety, he did not intend to write what is undoubtedly his most personal book. But upon discovering how these remarkable substances are improving the lives not only of the mentally ill but also of healthy people coming to grips with the challenges of everyday life, he decided to explore the landscape of the mind in the first person as well as the third.

All my older brothers have taken psychedelics, my oldest brother was a Leary follower and wanted to put LSD in the LA water system. I was more reserved and cautious. I enjoyed this book for giving me scientific and historical background. I appreciate the insights about ego. I would recommend this book to just about anyone.

Deep is a voyage from the ocean's surface to its darkest trenches, the most mysterious places on Earth. Fascinated by the sport of freediving - in which competitors descend to great depths on a single breath - James Nestor embeds with a gang of oceangoing extreme athletes and renegade researchers. He finds whales that communicate with other whales hundreds of miles away, sharks that swim in unerringly straight lines through pitch-black waters, and other strange phenomena.

Deeper understanding
Revisado: 06-13-18
I purchased this book because I knew nothing about freediving. Through the author’s descriptive personal accounts and researched storytelling, I have a greater understanding of the transformative power of this at times perilous activity.
My hope is that this book will open at least a few more eyes and hearts to the wonder of the oceans and the desperate need to protect them and in doing so, protect ourselves.
This is one if the best books I’ve read in the past year.

When she was suddenly given the opportunity of a new life in rural Jutland, journalist and archetypal Londoner Helen Russell discovered a startling statistic: the happiest place on earth isn't Disneyland but Denmark, a land often thought of by foreigners as consisting entirely of long, dark winters, cured herring, Lego and pastries. What is the secret to their success? Are happy Danes born or made?

Historia
In medical school, Matt McCarthy dreamed of being a different kind of doctor - the sort of mythical, unflappable physician who could reach unreachable patients. But when a new admission to the critical care unit almost died his first night on call, he found himself scrambling. Visions of mastery quickly gave way to hopes of simply surviving hospital life, where confidence was hard to come by and no amount of med school training could dispel the terror of facing actual patients.
