Poor Narration, Awkward Sex Scenes
Revisado: 02-05-19
I'm only halfway in and it's just not grabbing me, but the reason I felt it needed a review is that the narration is pretty mediocre and the sex scenes just strike an odd tone. The narrator is just "ok" for the main character and truly awful for most side characters; making them sound like the badly voiced Simpsons characters. What struck me as off about the story, besides its overall lackluster pace, is that the sex scenes are written about a barely adult teenage female romanced by a 30 something pilot, all of which is written in way more explicit detail than I needed to hear from a 65 year old male writer. So far, scenes that could've been left at brief overviews and still delivered the needed plot points have been broken out in strangely detailed terms describing positions and specific sexual acts taking place that just come across as weirdly unnecessary detail. All in all, I will finish it and hope for the best, but its not impressing me at the halfway point.

Wil Wheaton is Unbearable
Revisado: 04-24-17
I loved this book and have listened several times, each of which reminds me how much I dislike Wil Wheaton's overacting and smarmy mannerism. I was prompted to finally write a brief review here because my GF is listening to some of my audiobooks and quit on this one because of it which is a shame because again, its a great book.
Audiobook producers: please don't let him ruin any more narration.

Solid Story, Weak Narrator
Revisado: 04-27-16
I wish they wouldn't use this narrator. He does well enough with some characters, especially those most heavily used, but chooses odd accents that have no relation to how the book is physically written. Half of his side characters get obnoxiously sniveling voices like a Disney interpretation of a greedy merchant and his main character gasps and exclaims breathlessly in an overdramatic fashion constantly. Never mind that he made side characters speak in odd German and Norse sounding accents for no reason.

Historia
The Zombie War came unthinkably close to eradicating humanity. Max Brooks, driven by the urgency of preserving the acid-etched first-hand experiences of the survivors from those apocalyptic years, traveled across the United States of America and throughout the world, from decimated cities that once teemed with upwards of 30 million souls, to the most remote and inhospitable areas of the planet.

Elevates the "Audiobook" to an artform of its own.
Revisado: 09-14-11
As a novel this book takes zombies to a place they haven't been as a storytelling medium since the days of Romero's "Night of the Living Dead". The walking dead serve Brooks as a backdrop for glib social commentary on the state of humanity and keen observation on just what our civilization, or its loss, means to us as a species.
As an audiobook, "World War Z" separates itself from the crowd by being more than a simple oral rendition of the source material. The audio book brings an ensemble cast of voices to the table and truly brings to life each and every character with personality no one actor could achieve for the entire book alone. Despite being abridged, the audiobook captures the heart and horror of the original novel.
In short, if you read it and haven't heard it, then get the audio, if you heard it but want more, read the book, and if you haven't done either buy them both and make a long weekend of it; I promise you won't be disappointed.
