Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Historia
Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as "liquid armor", a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

Truth is stranger than fiction
Revisado: 11-08-18
Absolutely riveting book. It could be a testimony to the force of character and people's unbelievable willingness to follow someone who sounds like they know what they're talking about. But the author stuck to the story using Obviously well researched detail. You are left to draw your own conclusions and ask how was this possible.

Historia
Anna Fox lives alone - a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times...and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn't, her world begins to crumble. And its shocking secrets are laid bare.

Painful
Revisado: 07-08-18
A quarter of the way through I was irritated by clumsy tricks used to build syspense. Like using a movie line to make us think someone was looming over her and saying it to her then revealing it was the movie. Halfway thru i wished someone would just kill the heroine and put us all out of her misery. Three quarters thru I was ready to just kill myself to get it over with. Couldn't just stop reading as it was assigned in Book club. In summary painful and as my friend said... "Way too many words!"

this was fantastic now for the rest of the story
Revisado: 05-17-18
this was such a great read. the story of his life was unbelievable. I couldn't put the book down. I had to find out what happened next because it didn't seem like he could possibly survive. But here he is on USA TV. I sure would love to hear how he got there from a childhood in Africa. open my eyes to how other people live a maneuver through the juxtaposition of a strict Christian upbringing and a life of getting by with petty theft.

A diary is Nao's only solace—and will touch lives in ways she can scarcely imagine. it was wonderfully written but hard to read
Revisado: 01-22-18
it was an excellent book and it was well written. but I'm in a period of my life where I am increasingly disgusted about the vile behaviors of some mankind. it was very difficult to read about the abuse of the school girl and the soldier. it's bad enough that it's even possible much less to have it reimagined and have to read about it. I wish those images were not in my mind. and I wish people that can be guilty of such abuse were washed from the world. or perhaps I'm just ready to die (to be washed from the world myself) so that I don't have to deal with the knowledge of its evil anymore. there was plenty of that sentiment in this book: two people fixated on suicide. the only light in the book is the hundred and four year old who clearly chose life but one cloistered from the world as a monk. lots of material for Thought here.

Historia
Al Franken, Giant of the Senate is a book about an unlikely campaign that had an even more improbable ending: the closest outcome in history and an unprecedented eight-month recount saga, which is pretty funny in retrospect. It's a book about what happens when the nation's foremost progressive satirist gets a chance to serve in the United States Senate and, defying the low expectations of the pundit class, actually turns out to be good at it.
