Simple errors in information cause me to wonder if some of these stories are accurately reported. For instance, the author reports that Mike Rasker dropped a could popup that allowed Clemons to record his 20th strike out. Mike Rasker was playing for the Yankees by then. It was Don Baylor that dropped the pop up. Baylor and Easter were traded for each other before the start of the season.. No mystery here. easy facts to verify. So, I wonder what else is mistaken here as well.

it's a journey back to a time when baseball first came into my life. there are however a few errors, or perhaps misrepresentations of events in which important context is ommitted. Particulaly the account of Pedro Martinez throwing a 72 year old Zimmer to the ground. Really now,, anyone who witnessed the event live is fully aware that Zimmer charge at Pedro who, in defense, side stepped Zimmer's attack as Zimmer was losing his balance falling forward to the ground. This event is easily viewed on YouTube. The authors statement leaves out these facts, painting an image of Pedro as being a bully who abused and elderly man. That's dishonest journalism, but all too common today. There are other errors as well. But overall, it was a fun read taking me for a walk through my childhood, bringing back memories of the heroes of yesteryear. it's worth the read.

Interesting report on Rommel's life, but a bit brief. I don't know enough about the subject to know if the facts reported are accurate. But it's a good read as near as I can tell.

While this book may shed some light on historical facts, it takes a decidedly negative view of the people involved. It seems more of a long-winded tear down of historical figures than anything else. It runs down the path of our modern revisionist thinking to villainize the heroes of the past and create a kind of negative attitude in the minds of this present generation, an attitude of the past is a lie, forget about those losers. Truth is all heroes are flawed mortal men and women who in spite of their imperfections, failures, still rose to the challenges before them and accomplished great things, lead great victories to restore peace and freedom to the world. Who rebuilt Europe after the destruction of WW II? it's was the USA. who prevented the USSR from taking over all of Germany after the war? The USA. Are we perfect? Of course not. But we used to celebrate the best in people. This generation only wants to tear them down, focus on the sins, the faults, the short comings. Too bad. It could have been a great book.

I've always enjoyed biographies of historical figures. The best ones bring you in to know the person almost intimately, as if he becomes a friend, a mentor a role model. We don't have much for to look at today for Heroes. Sadly, more and more we have to look back for Heroes. Robins insights on human character and American social history have proven to be spot on, considering our present state of emotional panties running popular culture today. I'm sure there are men today whose heroic stories have yet to be written. they live among us unknown, unseen. And sadly, too late, we will know their stories. I was 40 years old when General Olds passed. Little did I know of him until visiting the National Museum of the USAF. I wish I could have been mentored by the likes of him. great book. Well written. He was a man, a human, who did great things and lived to tell of it. you won't be disappointed in this book.....if you have wars to hear, a heart to feel and eyes to see.
