Historia
When it first appeared in France, Anti-Oedipus was hailed as a masterpiece by some and "a work of heretical madness" by others. In it, Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari set forth the following theory: Western society's innate herd instinct has allowed the government, the media, and even the principles of economics to take advantage of each person's unwillingness to be cut off from the group. What's more, those who suffer from mental disorders may not be insane, but could be individuals in the purest sense, because they are by nature isolated from society.

Excellent production of a seminal work.

I am really impressed by the narrator's ability to cope with what can be really wonky language. I did feel they understood the assignment. I've read the title a few times before but like to take in media in more than way to flesh out perspectives and I'm happy with the production of this translation.

I've been rereading the SoT for the first time since I was a teen and they are absolutely a guilty pleasure. The first five book are entertaining even if Terry can't write dialouge. The world is neat, the magic system is neat, I do like the characters. But man, this book. This is like a freshman high school student trying to own you with Ayn Rand. It's not just bad, it's dumb beyond what is reasonable even in an idiot plot type story. I don't think an ounce of critical thinking went into this plot, which is definitely saying something.

The Idea of Prison Abolition

Historia
Despite its omnipresence and long history, imprisonment is a deeply troubling practice. In the United States and elsewhere, prison conditions are inhumane, prisoners are treated without dignity, and sentences are extremely harsh. Mass incarceration and its devastating impact on black communities have been widely condemned as neoslavery or “the new Jim Crow.” Can the practice of imprisonment be reformed, or does justice require it to be ended altogether?

the narrator was excellent, I enjoyed his performance.
the author, blergh. he's states in the beginning that he doesn't want to find the Platonic Ideal if a prison and then proceeds to list all the ways a prison would be okay if it were done ideally.
he also appaarently has no clue how psyciatric institutes operate, and equates those institutions with PoW and quarantined individuals (so maybe he does understand the similarity, but thinks it's all good).
he's cool with a little forced labor to defray prison costs (doesn't talk about how current prison funding is used), and suggests people contribute materially to the system that is oppressing them.
I wanted to engage with someone who had novel thoughts, or at least a novel way of talking about these things, but this book isn't it.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

my favorite part about her marketing campaign for the book was how average citizans stood up to the facist threat during WW2 at home, but *spoiler* no one faced any consequences.
