A "Must Read" (well, "listen") for LHOTP Fans
Revisado: 05-25-24
I bought this book because I'm a LHOTP junkie...I read every book before the third grade, and my childhood bff and I would alternate watching the show at her house or my house. My parents are both Mormon pioneer stock, so I felt like Laura could have been one of my ancestors. I had Holly Hobby dolls and renamed them Mary and Laura and Baby Carrie. I still own every book and I read "Little House on the Prairie" to my second graders every year before we visit our local "Cotton Days" Festival, which celebrates early Utah Pioneers who settled in our area. The presenters are always surprised that my class has read the book and are interested in the stories they share during our visit.
What I wasn't expecting, and what touched me most, was Alison's experience as a young girl and the abuse she endured. This hit close to my heart because I experienced an almost identical situation as a young girl. Hearing how she dealt with that abuse, how she suppressed it for many years, and how it bubbles back to the surface in her young adulthood felt as if I could have written it myself. I'm so grateful I listened to the book, not just as a LHOTP fan (I laughed out loud many times) but as a survivor of incest (I cried, oh how I cried). Thank you, Alison, for sharing your story!

Historia
The doorbell rings, just days after my beloved husband’s sudden death. I don’t recognise the woman on our doorstep, with her blonde highlights, a diamond bracelet identical to my own and a bouncing baby boy in her arms. As I show her inside, I notice her eyes grow wide as she takes in our spacious hallway, and the big squashy sofas that we all used to pile on. She glances at the silver-framed family photos and my little daughter hiding behind my skirts. She looks at me, her blue eyes serious. ‘I’m sorry’ she says. ‘I am your husband’s girlfriend. And this is his son.'

Twists and Turns Galore!
Revisado: 03-16-24
Just when you think you have it figured out, you realize you're wrong! The ending seemed kind of rushed...a LOT gets cleared up in just a short chapter two. Overall, a good story with a surprise ending.

Historia
With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen: the women's war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France—a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime.

Amazing Performance of a Beautifully Written Book
Revisado: 02-22-24
I have always been drawn to books about WWII. I think it all started with reading The Diary of Anne Frank in 6th grade. I also had the opportunity to live in Germany for several years and took many trips to surrounding countries. It is so satisfying to me that I've stood in places where stories like this one took place.

Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Thoroughly Enjoyed the Story
Revisado: 06-27-23
Yes, the language may be simple, but remember that a 17-year old girl with no formal education is telling it, which made perfect sense to me. I found it easy to follow...each chapter happened either before or AFTER the fire. Details are slowly revealed as Moonbeam works through her trauma and recovery with the help of her doctor. She is also gradually building a trusting and respectful relationship with the FBI agent while helping him with his investigation.
I lived just outside of Waco, TX when the Branch Davidian Cult nightmare happened and I've always been interested in that story. Now, I live in an area of Utah with a plethora of polygamist families and I've heard stories about girls and boys and women who have escaped from those situations; in fact, my mother worked directly with a group of "Lost Boys" who were kicked out of their polygamist families when they hit puberty. They were viewed as "competition" to the older men in the community who wanted to marry the young girls. These boys were driven into St. George or even to Las Vegas and dumped on the streets. Many turned to drugs and alcohol, crime, and prostitution just to survive. She worked with a group who helped them find housing, get GEDs, taught them interview skills, helped them dress for job interviews, etc.! It is always shocking to me that people will follow these sociopaths! They must be completely trusting and gullible, or so desperate to belong to a group or a family that they gladly accept the crazy rules (or "proclamations") that are imposed on them. And for parents to subject their children to this kind of madness is just unbelievable!
Anyhow, I am just an avid reader/listener, NOT a book critic. I read books or listen to books for enjoyment and relaxation. Some of the reviews on here make me wonder if some people think a little too highly of themselves.

I usually like true crime or psychological thrillers, but this one was a nice break from all that darkness. I enjoyed the story and was very satisfied with the ending. The narrator was also very pleasant to listen to. Five stars well earned!
