Historia
True crime podcaster Trinity Scott is chasing breakout success, and her brand-new serial may get her there. Her subject is Clayton Jay Pelley. More than two decades ago, the respected family man and guidance counselor confessed to the brutal murder of teenage student Leena Rai. But why he killed her has always been a mystery. In a series of exclusive interviews from prison, Clayton discloses to Trinity the truth about what happened that night beneath Devil’s Bridge. It’s not what anyone in the Pacific Northwest town of Twin Falls expects.

Disappointing, especially the narration
Revisado: 05-01-25
A disappointment from an author I like. Full of unlikeable characters making poor decisions, misplaced empathy throughout, rampant excuse making for choices made.
More disappointing than the book was the narration. Two narrators using overly affected character voicing. The result was extremely distracting, especially the attempt to voice the male characters. Rachel's voice, OMG, was awful. Remember narrators, less can be more. Inflection can be used effectively to identify different characters in a scene. Narrators attempting to do multiple unique voices, more often comes across as irritating and distracting, rather than effective. Certainly the case here.

Historia
Ruth and Nelson investigate a string of murders and disappearances deep within the abandoned tunnels hidden far beneath the streets of Norwich. Norwich is riddled with old chalk-mining tunnels, but no one's sure exactly how many. When Ruth is called in to investigate a set of human remains found in one of them, she notices the bones are almost translucent - a sign they were boiled soon after death. Once more she finds herself at the helm of a murder investigation.

More of a soap opera than a mystery. Lousy plot.

Stop the inaudible phone call narration!
Revisado: 11-18-24
Would have rated this a little higher if not for the ridiculous effect used when portraying a phone call. What’s the purpose of having the other end of the call being almost inaudible? Does the producer not understand that listeners are not in a sound-proof room when listening. Why not allow the narrator to maintain a normal sound level and voice for the other party on the line? The whole effect is so frustrating and distracting, it pisses me off as a listener.
The story premise and execution is a little out there as to plausibility and the interplay between some of the main characters is a little too touchy-feely for my tastes. My main takeaway though is the horrible phone conversation effect used throughout the book.

Historia
It is 1969 and Glasgow is in the grip of the worst winter in decades, yet it is something else that has Glaswegians on edge: a serial killer whose name alone is enough to make them tremble with fear. The Quaker has killed another victim, snatching a young woman from a nightclub and dumping her body like trash in the back of a cold-water tenement. He leaves no clues, and the investigation has led police down one blind alley after another.

Good story, awful narration
Revisado: 07-08-24
Loved the story but hated the narration. With a heavy Scottish accent, I felt the narration almost needed a translator. This would have been a much more enjoyable read rather than listen.

Historia
An exciting, evocative first-in-series noir novel set in 1973 Glasgow, a city on the cusp of a heroin epidemic, featuring detective Harry McCoy. When an 18-year-old boy shoots a young woman dead in the middle of a busy Glasgow street and then commits suicide, McCoy knows it can't be a random act of violence. With a newbie partner in tow, McCoy uses his underworld network to build a picture of a secret society run by Glasgow's wealthiest family, the Dunlops. Drugs, sex, incest; every nefarious predilection is catered to....

Good story, bad narration
Revisado: 11-16-23
We have the somewhat typical lone wolf detective with issues, yet the story itself is good, violent yes, but good.
My problem is the narration. I’m generally okay with most accents but this narrator laid on a heavy Scottish brogue that rendered portions of the book unintelligible.
