Continuing the saga of Walt Longmire and filling in some background. Love the characters and love the reader who is just perfect!

Just delightful. The characters and the era are written with humor and sensitivity, while the narrator is just perfect for it. Highly recommended!

This is really bad. I listened because a more recent book by this author was highly recommended by Stephen Fry, who is normally reliable. Poorly written, inane plot, terrible characters and - of course - no one actually solves it so the author resorts to explaining it himself. As if he also got so bored with it he just gave up and told us.

Exquisitely told stories, well performed. Love his writing! And wrapping up Eve’s story from Rules of Civility is just perfect.

Story is naive and amateurish. Richard Osman wannabe. Performer is a class act but even she cannot breathe life into this.

The Martian was amazing. Artemis I found unreadable. So mixed expectations with Project Hail Mary. And I Ioved everything about it! Great story, great characters, amazing research and detail. It’s always a good book if you feel like the participants became your friends and that you’ll miss them when it’s finished

The whole premise is just ridiculous. A complete amateur with the sole motive of revenge is sent to Paris to assassinate Hitler? Apparently her only qualification is that she’s a top marks woman. Yet 3 clear shots can’t do the job? Not helped by feeble British accents by the narrator. Awful.

Given the number of books in the series, the subject matter - and the ratings - I thought I'd give this a shot. And what a bad mistake that was.

The set up and premise is great. But its all downhill from there. Full of implausible characters, all behaving in ways no normal person would do. Example: the girl Shiloh who is lost in the wilderness and hunted down by killers, chased through snow and the cold for days, eventually escapes and gets back to civilization, exhausted, hungry. Does she go to the sheriff, or to hospital, or get help? No, of course not. She goes to the home of the good man who guided her out there and helped her - and who she knows was killed by the bad guys - and takes a shower!!!! And then when people show up glad she's alive she behaves as if she just got back from the library.

The only way to get through this book is to treat it for what it is. Trite, hackneyed, a badly written farce or send up of a murder mystery. Unbelievably awful!

Oh boy! I loved the early Gamache books. The story lines were compelling, the array of characters rich, the narration top notch. Well, not any more. In fact, I'm returning this book and it's never again for Gamache.

It's as if Louise Penny's writing has regressed instead of developing over the series, finally reaching the awful depths of this piece of work. Repetitive, tiresome, hackneyed, Bizarre behavior by contrived characters who have stagnated in their development by a writer who seems increasing desperate to find some sort of angle for a new book but ends up with a mess. Things that were quirkily humorous in early books have become annoying tics. Characters that were interesting and evolving have become boring and trite. The entire story is a confused jumble, and it appears Penny just tries to keep it going by throwing more ill-conceived situations and characters into the the mix. "Oh, lets have Gamache randomly sing Edelweiss at various odd points, that should be good". "Ah, let me repeat "whores and trannies" endlessly every time I want to describe the drug underbelly in Montreal. That will really get the mood of the place". And on and on and on ...

As for the performance, well, Robert Bathurst is no Ralph Cosham. Ralph brought the characters alive, with rich voice characterization, French Quebec accents and a clear spirit that enhanced the work. Bathurst is monotonous, devoid of accent, charm or any effort to put that into his characters even though Penny continues the endearing sprinkling of French words and phrases. It's as if he's just going through the motions with a tape loop in the back of his head going "just get it over with as quickly as possible and cash the check". Cosham added unique flavor and depth to Penny's work. Bathurst takes a bad job and - as if it were possible - manages to make it even worse.

Désolé, Armand. Hang up the boots, mon ami. Your time is up.

What disappointed you about The Last Equation of Isaac Severy?

A very positive review in the WSJ got my to buy this book. A huge letdown. The overall premise was promising. The execution was erratic and seemingly pointless.

What was most disappointing about Nova Jacobs’s story?

Meandering story, and the author seemed to be perpetually thinking "ok, what next worthless character can I bring in?".

What didn’t you like about Lisa Flanagan’s performance?

Very monotone.
