A complete and calamitous snooze fest. I have a feeling both the author and the narrator must be rookies to each of their jobs. This reminded me very much of a high school sophomore taking a crack at a mystery novel and trying very hard to inject it with novelty and interest.

You know those B grade movies that are so formulaic that you can successfully predict what the characters are going to say? This is the book version of a movie like that. I mean, there’s a laser beam that can kill, come o…n.

This was my first book by this author and overall it was a treat. The narration was pitch perfect for the setting of the story and the characters. (I’m beginning to reflexively smile when I hear the Irish accent.) The story arc is simple enough but the depth and layers of the characters’ inner lives are the key ingredients of this unexpected treat.

Incredibly unique storyline. Well researched science facts blended section. This is my first book by this author. It won’t be the last. I had an absolute blast following every twist in the story.

I am South Asian immigrant in the West. This was my first audio book by a South Asian author which features an (admittedly much younger) South Asian immigrant to the West. I enjoyed the novelty of familiar names, places, accents, and food that are always in the background of the story. Once that novelty receded, I got the distinct feeling the people, places, and scenes in the book were thinly disguised props whose real goal was to make room for the main character's monologues and commentary. Those monologues and commentary don't stray far from the facile boundaries of the all too familiar tropes of English-colonialism-is-an-atrocity-that-hasn't-been-acknowledged and being-white-means-being-privileged. I always enjoy when authors take the time to paint intimate and detailed portraits of a place and time - to the point where I can actually smell the scene! I missed those in this book.

The narrator did a decent (but unremarkable) job of bringing the story and characters to life.

This was my first sci-fi book on Audible. I’m not a real fan of the genre so I was wary when I bought it. Once I got past the initial surprise at the tech bro millennial lingo and inexplicable enthusiasm, I enjoyed the rest of the book immensely. Like the author says in his author’s note, this is a light and fun book. The narrator’s reading was perfectly in tune with the spirit and tone of the book, with strong shades of Jack Black’s delightful intensity in School of Rock. Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

I don’t know if rich white people at the turn of the last century actually spoke the kind of classic/formal ye olde Victorian English the author chose for her characters. But I found that linguistic richness and density very captivating. The main characters give voice to long and commentaries about “man” and the vagaries of human nature. I found a lot of resonating truth in those words. The narration was top notch. I think I’ve become a fan of a new genre of books, thanks TC!

The characters and plot line of this book have the predictability of an eighth grader who’s been asked to add dialogue to character outlines and they are doing this for the first time. Save your $s and go listen to something else.

Good for a mindless zone out session - chewing gum for the mind. The plot twist leaves you asking, “Wait, that’s it?!”

This was my first Dean Koontz book in any format. I had high hopes going into this. I leave it disappointed and unsatisfied. The plot was predictable and the characters were caricatures from a Tom Cruise moral-person-up-against-diabolical-powers movie. That makes for engaging watching on the big screen but falls flat on the page. The narration was just meh. Five chapters in and all the male characters sounded like the same person.
