Historia
Leovander Loveage is a master of small magics. He can summon butterflies with a song or turn someone’s hair pink by snapping his fingers. Though such minor charms don’t earn him much respect, anything more elaborate always blows up in his face, and so Leo vowed long ago never to use powerful magic again. That is, until a mishap with a forbidden spell binds Leo to obey the commands of his longtime rival, Sebastian Grimm. Grimm is Leo’s complete opposite—respected, exceptionally talented, and absolutely insufferable.

Whimsy, sassy, perfect narration
Revisado: 02-06-25
I was smitten with this story and the characters before the end of the first chapter. It is whimsical and sassy, but also quietly romantic and touching. Cozy yet somehow also adventurous. The audio narration is perfection, especially the character representation. The narrator’s delivery of many of Leo’s lines had me laughing out loud. I couldn’t help but think through the whole thing what a fantastic TV series this would be.

Around the world, black handprints are appearing on doorways, scorched there by winged strangers who have crept through a slit in the sky. In a dark and dusty shop, a devil's supply of human teeth grown dangerously low. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherwordly war. Meet Karou. She fills her sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not be real; she's prone to disappearing on mysterious "errands"; she speaks many languages—not all of them human; and her bright blue hair actually grows out of her head that color.

Original and captivating
Revisado: 09-13-24
This is the second series I have read by Laini Taylor and I can say now with confidence she is one of my favorite authors. Her tales are some of the most original fairytales I have read, leaving me captivated to keep reading and discover what myths she is creating. Her world-building and character depth are outstanding. She expertly weaves multiple magical tales into one cohesive story.
The narrator was overall pretty good, but there were a few times I did a double take with strange pronounciations of basic words, which I read in other reviews as well. Still, definitely a solid audiobook.

Just lovely
Revisado: 04-08-24
I went into this knowing nothing about the story and never having read anything by this author. I came out mesmerized with this dreamy, poignant story and enchanting cast of characters. First 5 star read of the year.
Taylor’s world-building is the best I have read in YA and her poetic writing style breaks your heart in the best way.
“Good people do all the things bad people do, Lazlo. It's just that when they do them, they call it justice.”
“I turned my nightmares into fireflies and caught them in a jar.”
“And so Grief and Shame abided in adjoining rooms with the door shut between them, holding their pain in their arms instead of each other.”

Devilishly satisfying.
Revisado: 10-25-23
Perfect fall atmospheric read. The last 20-30% is un-put-downable. If you have ever dreamed of the ultimate revenge, this book is for you. The narration adds to the haunting/witchy vibes but the physical book has some amazing artwork. Get both to enjoy the full effects of Brom’s talents!

Shirley Jackson meets Neil Gaiman
Revisado: 07-05-23
"I am so happy. I am so scared. The two, it turns out, can walk together, hand in hand."
Hauntingly beautiful story about light and shadow, silence and sound, language and art, life and decay. But most of all, it is about lost and found family.
The narrator is absolutely stunning. Pay no attention to reviews that complain about a middle-aged man narrating the story of a 14 year old girl. The story is in third person, not first. So the narrator exists outside the story. And his deep, calm, haunting voice lends to the atmosphere of the book. His voice of the master sent chills down my spine in the best possible way.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Sweet but predictable. Annoying narrator.
Revisado: 01-14-23
Meh. I mean, it’s a sweet story but I’m not sure I enjoyed the ride. The most fleshed-out character was the octopus, but unfortunately his POV is limited. Added to that, everything is revealed in the first quarter of the book and that tactic only works if the story has enough side quests and character development to keep the reader intrigued. Unfortunately, nothing ever happens and some characters feel pointless and most are whinny and annoying with little growth.
The narrator of this audio seems to be popular, but (at least in this book) she used Valley girl uptalk for almost every. single. character. Nails on a chalkboard for me.

Feels like a beautifully animated movie
Revisado: 05-27-22
"Nothing extraordinary is ever done out of reason or logic, but because it’s the only way for your soul to breathe.”
What a lovely book. For anyone who is in need of a breath of fresh air and an escape from our oftentimes harsh reality. And for fans of beautifully animated movies like Spirited Away. Please, someone make this into the gorgeous animated movie it deserves.

So lovely. This felt like a cross between Outlander and The Witch's Heart. Deeply developed characters, multiple layered love stories, spirits, haunting atmosphere, and the Scottish narrator was *chef's kiss.

Stopping a tornado was the first of many strange events that seem to follow Weylyn from town to town, although he doesn't like to take credit. As amazing as these powers may appear, they tend to manifest themselves at inopportune times and places. From freak storms to trees that appear to grow over night, Weylyn's unique abilities are a curiosity at best and at worst, a danger to himself and the woman he loves. But Mary doesn't care.

Underdeveloped characters who all sound the same
Revisado: 03-05-22
I'm rarely bored with magical realism/fantasy stories but this was sooooo boring. I also typically enjoy different POVs but every character sounded the same and all were underdeveloped. There was just no point to the story. A boy has some powers to control the weather and animals and....that's it. No character development. No exploration on being different or how we treat nature. There is a lowkey romance that was lacking any chemistry or tension. In addition, I found the male narrators highly annoying. One sounded like a 100 year old man but the character was maybe middle aged. Another had an almost cartoonish quality to his tone. I would not recommend this story or audiobook to anyone.
