Historia
When her whole life collapsed, Rae still had books. Dying, she seizes a second chance at living: a magical bargain that lets her enter the world of her favorite fantasy series. She wakes in a castle on the edge of a hellish chasm, in a kingdom on the brink of war. Home to dangerous monsters, scheming courtiers and her favourite fictional character: the Once and Forever Emperor. He’s impossibly alluring, as only fiction can be. And in this fantasy world, she discovers she's not the heroine, but the villainess in the Emperor's tale.

Gonna Need a Tylenol for This Hangover
Revisado: 02-09-25
Just?? Wow? A friend sent this over to me, and I was reasonably skeptical but decided to give it a try. Once I started, I couldn’t stop listening to save my life. The characters are amazing and have actual, messy, real development. The world is gorgeous. I want 45 more books in this series. I have no idea how I can listen to something else after this.
Also, Moira, please narrate my life.

Big Plot Yikes
Revisado: 05-19-24
I don't expect the greatest plot with this type of book, but wow, this was unbelievably bad. Spoilers ahead!
First, I have no clue what lithe readers are talking about when they say they love Ryat and Blakely. These two (and everyone else) are the definition of one-dimensional. You never even learn what they're going to college for, because apparently it doesn't matter! No one goes to class! Blakely has a "dream" of going to Stanford. Why? No clue, you never find out. The only motivating factors in Blakely's life are getting fucked, and fucked with kink. The "character development" is just Blakely one day being like "Yep, I'm in love with this guy now and also I feel good about murder now too".
Nothing in this plot makes sense:
1. The Lords apparently rule the world but never actually go to school? Would Ryat not need to learn SOMETHING to become a judge?
2. Blakely is raised by a father who runs a multi-billion dollar company, but is overwhelmed by the grandeur of the hotel the Lords live in? Also, she's somehow dependent on her mother paying for everything?
3. The Lords constantly kill each other for "betrayal", though what they're betraying is frequently unclear.
4. Apparently this cabal of billionaires feel that the best hitmen money can buy are a pack of 20-year old trust fund babies with absolutely no training or related skills?
5. You get half a book of repetitive sex scenes, followed by "Omg let's get married".
6. Blakely runs away at one point because she totally hates Ryat. You see her decision to run, and the night she gets found, 3 weeks later. What the fuck happened in there? Where is she? How did she get away if she didn't take her car, family jet, or other means of transportation, especially since she says she didn't have any money?
7. Blakely is apparently terrified of being found, but when she wakes up from Ryat drugging her (again, jfc), she immediately decides he's perfect and she should stay with him forever.
8. Probably 3/4 of the book takes place between August and October, with a random jump to later in the year for the last 1/4. I was actually thrown when Blakely started tapking about Halloween because-- I'm sorry, when the hell did all of this happen? Then, time jump! Nothing happens, don't think about it!
Look, I get it. It's hard to find good dark romance. But that isn't an excuse to phone it in like this and close your eyes to any (not even difficult!!) plot questions. Demand better from your romance authors. Franky, you'd be better off looking to the internet for either plot or spice.

Good, Light Listen
Revisado: 10-31-22
The story is cute and original, and I like the romance. I struggled a little bit with the MC-- honestly, she ended up coming off as self-centered and mean by the midpoint of the novel. Her issues are kind of addressed in the climax, but not fully. Girl needs therapy.
A couple of reviews address the use of pronouns early on. The funny thing is, the characters who present their pronouns straight off are tertiary at best. They're absent most of the novel, and don't come back up until maybe the last 10%. It ends up being a kind of clumsy "Look! Gender diversity!" moment. If you're worried the novel will be full of unclear theys and thems, it's actually fine and likely will not distract you from the overall story once you get past the first 10/15 minutes.

Good story
Revisado: 08-21-21
It was a good story overall, but I really struggled to stay connected and engaged. I never connected to the characters or cared much about them. I even stopped listening with half an hour to go to listen to other things that had me more hooked in. The narration was good, but sometimes very whispery and hard to hear. Overall it was fine but I probably won't be getting book 2.

Great Finish
Revisado: 05-18-17
I really loved this, but I wish there had been better follow through for the secondary characters. After all the work that's put into their development, it seems like they're left out in the cold.

Good Conclusion to the Series
Revisado: 07-29-16
The second book kinda dragged for me, and honestly the beginning of this one did a well, but it really picks up and finds its feet again midway through. A solid conclusion to this series.
