John Grisham never, ever fails to satisfy, and this story is no exception. The ins and outs of money laundering, murder, attempted murder, and judicial corruption all wrapped out in an input-downable listen.

I love the camaraderie between the team Joy Ellis‘s series. Well drawn characters, and excellent plots make her books irresistible.

This was delightful. Great characters and plenty of drama, but also clever and funny. The action figure is female, supported by her ex-detective father-in-law and a wonderfully droll famous mystery writer, There are private jet trips all over the world, Murderers and money launderers unmasked, drug dealers used as informants, and the good guys (and women) vindicated. In other words, a well-written caper that will leave you breathless for more. The excellent reader just adds to the enjoyment.

The story was pretty wild, but the characters were well-drawn and the plot intriguing. On the run from people who are trying to kill him for some unknown reason, Paul and his friend Bridget get aid from some unlikely corners. The reader does a great job of capturing the voice of Bunny McGarry, perhaps the most offbeat and interesting character of all. All in all, a good listen. . .assuming you don’t mind swearing. There is a lot of it! In my opinion, just adds to the veracity of the characters.

Jacqueline Winspear always does a fine job of portraying women who have survived the horrors of war and are slowly assimilating back into normal life. While Maisie Dobbs was a nurse, Linnie White was a combatant, with skills and attitude that she brought home from the battlefield, yet she was compassionate and kind to those around her. Releasing herself from those horrors and that mindset was challenging, but something she accomplished in the end. That was perhaps the bravest act of all.

As ever, the author provides a thoughtful, intriguing story with a strong female protagonist. And superb narration.

Sophie is a driven accomplished chef his life takes an unfortunate turn when she is discredited privately and publicly by the chef for whom she is working. It’s a put up job, engineered by two fellow chefs. After wallowing in self pity for months (though it may only have been weeks— it seemed interminable) She eventually travels to France, where her grandmother is seriously ill. The Chateau is a gorgeous inn, and her grandmother a renowned chef. After Sophie finally gets over herself (truly, I wanted to slap her several times. Snap out of it!), her life and career are brilliantly changed and she finds love, a home, and a fairytale existence. Enjoyable listen once she finally gets past the self pity and self doubt.

I haven’t read The Maid, the first mystery in the series, but I find the main character to be fascinating. Brilliant, odd, apparently “on the spectrum” as people with autistic tendencies are referred to, her amazing memory and eye for details allows her to see things others miss. The book is quirky and enjoyable.

Lightweight fun, but addresses the issue of votes for women and skims the surface of what suffragettes went through. Lady Hardcastle and Florence make a great team, with fondness and respect born of many years and adventures together. I always enjoy their capers.
