I have read and enjoyed KH before but this one just hit me the wrong way. I admire KH for writing a book about the valiant nurses who absolutely did experience combat in every shift that they worked. But this book was written FOR women - and that's perfectly fine. I couldn't relate to the young female main character and the choices that she makes. And the men are mostly all philandering dolts. More soap opera than an enjoyable read for me.

I found this book on quite a few lists. It
was a long book and about halfway through I just decided I would force myself to finish and see what the deal truly was. Because at the halfway point I wasn't getting it.

I wish I had my time back. I found it a repetitive grind. A sad story and a familiar story all at once about drugs and broken people.

It was very well written, the narration was quite good, but it's just a depressing book I would never recommend.

…it really was awful. I haven’t been a fan of SK of late but I decided to give this one a try. I gave it plenty of leeway to develop and promised myself I would tough it out. We’ll it seems like the work of someone else, maybe an intern, and it’s hard to think that it came from the hand of “the man”. The performance was just ok. I can’t place the blame there. I’m a fantasy fan among other genres, but this isn’t a patch on so many others that I have enjoyed.

The only reason I stuck with this weak effort was to see if it would ever turn the corner to being compelling. It didn’t. The most disappointing SK book I’ve ever read. Nothing - nothing happens in the first 66% of the book. Best sellers by mythical authors aren’t automatically the “best” books. Bummer.

The first person narrator is Lionel Esrog and he has Tourette's syndrome. If that puts you off then skip this book. But you'd be foolish to do so because the author and the narrator involve his quirks and tics into a great character to listen to. The narrator in particular gets big kudos for his voices, clarity, and pacing. This book was a true "page-turner" in that I couldn't wait to get out the next day for my long walk and listen. That's a real credit. In the end, the story was less exciting than the journey before it, but I see now why the movie was changed to sex it up a bit. This takes place in the 70-s-90s where the movie is in the 50s. But on the whole, I enjoyed the story and recommend it for its great writing and audio performance.

I always wanted to read a thorough study about Robert Oppenheimer and this one delivered. The narrator Michael Goldstrom was fantastic and made the entire book a pleasure to listen to. Not being a physics guy did not detract from my enjoyment of the book nor my understanding of the matter. It was more important to understand the characters in the story than the equations. That made everything very easy to follow. The arc of Oppenheimer's life was interesting from beginning to end. Most of us know him strictly through his supervision of the Manhattan project at Los Alamos, but the book gives us insight into the man, his mind, his brilliant intellect, his flawed personality, his masterful management of brilliant people, and his weaknesses as a father, husband and friend.

Any additional comments?

McCullough is McCullough. He's great. This is a very good story that fills in the blanks about the Wright Brothers as individuals. But I found the description of the years of trial and error through development to be very interesting. What happened after Kitty Hawk is the untold story that McCullough also treats us to. I do wish that there was a little more "meat on the bones" only because I enjoy his books so much.

Any additional comments?

This is a great additional read for anyone doing comprehensive reading about WWII and the Nazi's. It was eye-opening about the process that was in place to systematically raid the treasuries of each country they conquered. That made for a good story as countries expecting to be conquered took great measures to stash their gold. Then of course was the story about what happened post-war as countries tried to salvage their economies and their treasure. Good book!

Any additional comments?

Well researched and well written, I found it to be a bit stretched out. It isn't "Titanic" and there's not enough here to make a movie. But it's a good historical read and the details about the captain was my favorite part.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Grover Garnder always does an excellent job.

Any additional comments?

A bit disappointed that this wasn't a more detailed focus on the California gold rush. It was more of a global perspective which would have been fine if represented as such. In fact it also spent very little time on the actual day to day operations of a gold mine, and not enough detail as to the mechanics. It was okay.
