I remember the Challenger disaster when it happened -- I was just a young boy in elementary school, but I still vividly remember sitting in my classroom watching the launch, and the subsequent explosion 73 seconds later. Adam Higginbotham masterfully tells the story of this disaster in great detail, going all the way back to NASA's infancy. Without vilifying NASA or its subsidiaries, Higginbotham pulls back the curtain of the corners that NASA cuts to keep up with an insane launch schedule with dwindling funds from the government. My heart aches for the 7 members of that crew, and their families that have never quite recovered from this tragedy.

First, for those of you who are bored by the intricacies of the stock market, finance, and all things related to it -- don't pick up this book. Though fictional, Trust takes a deep dive into the nuances of money that will turn off certain types of readers. With that said, this book is told in 4 VERY different parts -- there is almost a schizophrenic feel to the telling of the stories, and a few times I had to stop, rewind, and re-listen as I was sure I had to have missed something (I didn't miss anything, the story is simply told in a unique way). The last part of the story is as absolutely breath-taking as it is heart-breaking -- if you have recently lost someone to cancer, I suggest you take some time before listening to this story. All in all, I totally understand why Trust won the Pulitzer in 2022 -- the story is fantastically told, as well as researched. The way the story turns on itself and twists into sometime much larger is eye opening.

This book is phenomenal. The character of Donal is perfectly fleshed out. He is an 12 year old boy going on 50. His life experiences are many, and the characters that he interacts with are thoroughly examined and developed. Of course, his uncle Herman manages to steal many of the scenes, as he is such a likable man with so much to give. Just read/listen to this book. I only wish that there was another Ivan Doig book written after this one.

Let's get this out of the way, Becoming the Boogeyman isn't as good as Chasing the Boogeyman. The storyline is OK, and characters come and go without much development. The best parts of the book are the detail that goes into Chizmar's writing -- the tangents that make the story seem more "real", and the inner dialogue that Chizmar is constantly having with himself. Ultimately, this story is a long setup for the 3rd book that is forthcoming. If you read the first book, temper your expectations.
