Historia
The story of the Boston Massacre - when on a late winter evening in 1770, British soldiers shot five local men to death - is familiar to generations. But from the very beginning, many accounts have obscured a fascinating truth: the Massacre arose from conflicts that were as personal as they were political.

Worthwhile
Revisado: 02-19-24
The material may be a little narrow to draw general conclusions about what takes place in the years following the Massacre. But it certainly adds greatly to an understanding of environment in Boston on March 5, 1770, and a somewhat different picture than the Revere engraving.

Bacon. McDonalds. Cinnabon. Hot Pockets. Kale. Stand-up comedian and author Jim Gaffigan has made his career rhapsodizing over the most treasured dishes of the American diet (“choking on bacon is like getting murdered by your lover”) and decrying the worst offenders (“kale is the early morning of foods”).

Good in small doses
Revisado: 11-13-18
The author comedian succeeds in making us laugh — mainly to ourselves - about the food we consume while making larger points about life. The delivery over the course of a full length book can get monotonous which is why smaller bites are recommended.

Historia
In Wealth, Poverty, and Politics, Thomas Sowell, one of the foremost conservative public intellectuals in the country, argues that political and ideological struggles have led to dangerous confusion about income inequality in America. Pundits and politically motivated economists trumpet ambiguous statistics and sensational theories while ignoring the true determinant of income inequality: the production of wealth.

Sowell does it again
Revisado: 12-26-15
Anyone wishing to understand the colossal waste of time of devoting intellectual energy to the perceived problem of income inequality could not do better than starting with this first rate work by this accomplished economist and public intellectual. With characteristic dispassion he continues to lead the charge against Thomas Pickety's charge. But there is some sadness that sets in as you come to the realization that so many bad public policy ideas with so many bad consequences have resulted from the flawed redistributionist view that monopolizes political discourse. For those who attended our elite universities and studied the soft sciences, it is probably too late to request a tuition refund. But with one audible credit expended for this work you will have acquired a strong counter to the nonsense that was passed off as serious thought at the academy. Definitely worth the investment.

From the author of the acclaimed novel Watergate comes a galvanizing new novel about the tumultuous administration of the most consequential and enigmatic president of modern times - Ronald Reagan. Finale takes listeners to the political gridiron of Washington in 1986, the wealthiest enclaves of Southern California, and the volcanic landscape of Iceland, where the president engages in two almost apocalyptic days of negotiation with Mikhail Gorbachev.

Sophisticated gossip gives way to poignancy
Revisado: 10-13-15
One minute Nancy Reagan is confiding with Merv Griffin, the next Richard Nixon is telling Zsa Zsa Gabor that he was responsible for bringing dancing to Whittier College as a student leader there. The dialogue is well paced and fun, capturing some of the more interesting doers and their deeds in 1986, largely, when Reagan and Gorbachev were negotiating the end of the Cold War. And the narrator capably captures a parade of personalities. This is a good read and ultimately through the magic of fiction creates a portrait of the Reagans that is as plausible and real as any biographer can conjure. This also is a terrific companion to the author's novel about Watergate.

Historia
A view into the tumultuous and creative life of Edgar Allan Poe. Today the name Edgar Allan Poe invokes a tragic genius whose mastery of horror seems inexorably tied to his tormented life. But in his own time, Poe was above all a craftsman-an editor and reviewer desperately trying to earn a living by transmuting the wild ephemera of early Victorianism into innovations in science fiction, horror, and detective literature.

A fine short biography
Revisado: 09-14-15
This short read is a terrific introduction to Poe's life and work. It captures the failures and successes achieved by Poe during his short, troubled 40 years, and is narrated by one of the most professional readers in the audio books world. The one problem with an introductory biography in an audio format is that without the physical copy and footnotes, you are prevented from consulting other works relied upon by the author. But with Poe this is a minor issue because the next step for the listener is not another bio but Poe's own work, prose or poetry, and these are widely available in one volume editions at any bookstore.

Historia
History has not been kind to Jefferson Davis. Many Americans of his own time and in later generations considered him an incompetent leader, not to mention a traitor. Not so, argues James M. McPherson. In Embattled Rebel, McPherson shows us that Davis might have been on the wrong side of history, but that it is too easy to diminish him because of his cause’s failure. Gravely ill throughout much of the Civil War, Davis nevertheless shaped and articulated the principal policy of the Confederacy—the quest for independent nationhood—with clarity and force.

Not enough about Davis
Revisado: 09-07-15
The reviews relating to the book's focus on wartime strategies and less about Davis' personal life during the war have it right. For that reason its short lengthy make it worthwhile but a close call for individuals that want to learn something about Davis. For instance, the author spends two lines discussing the death of one of the Davis children during the war. Upon completing the book you would know nothing more about this child or the other Davis children.
