Historia
Once again, as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. first observed in the 1960s, it is midnight in America—a dark time of division and anxiety, with threats of violence looming in the shadows. In 2008, the Trinity United Church in Chicago received threats when one of its parishioners, Senator Barack Obama, ran for president. “We’re going to kill you” rang in Reverend Otis Moss’s ears when he suddenly heard a noise in the middle of the night. He grabbed a baseball bat to confront the intruder in his home.

For all Americans of all skin colors
Revisado: 10-02-24
The author’s voice kept me listening. His message keeps me listening again and again. If this country is ever going to heal itself, it must do what is laid out in this book. This means Indigenous, European, African, Asian, and the rest who call themselves Americans. There is no other country in this world where you will find such a vast number of people whose ancestors come from other countries stretching from every habitable continent. America is like an experiment. God asks us to do this one thing: love our neighbors as ourselves. America is the proving ground. Can we do it? Dancing in the Darkness show us how.

Historia
In 1995 Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, on a rare family vacation, seven-year-old Nainoa Flores falls overboard a cruise ship into the Pacific Ocean. When a shiver of sharks appears in the water, everyone fears for the worst. But instead, Noa is gingerly delivered to his mother in the jaws of a shark, marking his story as the stuff of legends. Nainoa’s family, struggling amidst the collapse of the sugarcane industry, hails his rescue as a sign of favor from ancient Hawaiian gods - a belief that appears validated after he exhibits puzzling new abilities.

What Happens to People
Revisado: 08-28-23
We all love to vacation on the islands of Hawai’i. It once belonged to a people not white. But they were colonized then taken over by white people. So when we sip Mai Tai’s under the coconut trees, read this book and think about how the displaced people that once owned the Islands, try to survive living in another culture today.

A Must Read for Every Citizen
Revisado: 08-06-23
As a history teacher, I read countless textbooks of the story of the first Mayflower landing. I visited Plymouth. After listening to the “real,” in depth, fascinating saga of the very beginning of the United States, I realized I had just a smattering of knowledge as to the who, what, and where. In addition, another unsung hero rises! Without Stephen Hopkins, Plymouth would have been another Jamestown. This author puts you right there, 403 years ago, where there was never a dull moment.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

Exceptional writing and voice
Revisado: 03-09-23
This is a human and octopus story woven together. It’ll make you both laugh and cry. Both narrators are exceptional. Marin Ireland, however, gives voices to females and males, the old and young, plus an accent for one, so well that you experience something beyond listening.

Empire of the Summer Moon spans two astonishing stories. The first traces the rise and fall of the Comanches, the most powerful Indian tribe in American history. The second entails one of the most remarkable narratives ever to come out of the Old West: the epic saga of the pioneer woman Cynthia Ann Parker and her mixed-blood son, Quanah, who became the last and greatest chief of the Comanches.

History of Every American
Revisado: 02-10-23
I used to play Cowboys and Indians when I was a child. Now I know the true version from this book. Compelling, unbiased and fair description, of two cultures meeting head on. Then there was the unsung hero about whom I never knew…even as a history teacher. This book, so well read, is captivating with every “page.” This is our history never told with such riveting details and truth.

Historia
Of the many recent books on the historical Jesus, none has explored what the latest biblical scholarship means for personal faith. Now, in Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time, Marcus Borg addresses the yearnings of those who want a fully contemporary faith that welcomes rather than oppresses our critical intelligence and openness to the best of historical scholarship. Borg shows how a rigorous examination of historical findings can lead to a new faith in Christ, one that is critical and, at the same time, sustaining.

Making Sense of Jesus and Christianity
Revisado: 11-14-22
I’ve struggled for years about the message and claims that churches give about Jesus. There seemed to be dichotomies with what Jesus said and what churches say that Jesus said. This book wonderfully cleared the confusion for me and gave true meaning to Biblical messages.

Historia
Have you ever wondered "Why did I do that?" or "Why can't I just control my behavior?" Others may judge our reactions and think, "What's wrong with that person?" When questioning our emotions, it's easy to place the blame on ourselves; holding ourselves and those around us to an impossible standard. It's time we started asking a different question. Through deeply personal conversations, Oprah Winfrey and renowned brain and trauma expert Dr. Bruce Perry offer a groundbreaking and profound shift from asking “What’s wrong with you?” to “What happened to you?”

Release from childhood trauma
Revisado: 08-10-21
Besides both having soothing voices and compelling stories, they lead you down a path of understanding that who you are today carries the weight and stumbling blocks caused by childhood trauma—the definition of which includes more of you than you thought. It’s not what’s “matter with me?” But “what happened to me” approach that helps the listener understand what is tripping them in adulthood. And of course, how then to change PTSD to PTSW (Post Traumatic Stress Wisdom), where the power lies.

Revisado: 02-25-21
Ms. Steadman’s voice is very pleasant and that is huge with Audible books. The opening chapter will keep you guessing as to how this story will unfold...and you will be wrong. Written in the first person, the author is a genius in making the character come alive. Her imagery is impeccable as well.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

The Truth About One of our Greatest Presidents
Revisado: 02-17-19
Five months ago I visited Grant’s Tomb to get a stamp in my National Park passport. I went to the Visitor Center and was encouraged to watch a video. I was dumbfounded! This history teacher never knew Grant was one of the greatest civil rights advocates in America. I was drawn to read Grant and 48 hours flew by; it was riveting! This man was praised worldwide. His funeral procession was attended by 1.5 million people. Yet today, Americans know little about his brilliance as a general nor how he single-handedly brought the Union back together. This book is fascinating and absolutely a must read!
