Irony
Revisado: 09-23-24
Sometimes doing the wrong thing is the right thing, until it isn’t. This book is a touching study of a conflicted character in a conflicted society. Justice and prejudice are strange bedfellows, and their children make for a great story.

How is Patterson successful?!?!
Revisado: 08-27-24
What a nasty piece of work this plot is. I pity the actors. Predictable and meaningless. Trope after trope. Patterson is low hanging literary fruit. Mindless fluff and hot air.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

The mix of natural history and Victorian style lovers who silently long for one another could have been great, but instead it had a few delicious moments of using animal behaviors as commentary and then veering back into maudlin yearning.

Flat
Revisado: 08-16-24
The narrator was wonderful, but the writing was flat. It seemed like a movie script that needed actors to save it. The plot was just interesting enough to keep me curious, but barely.

Gripping
Revisado: 08-14-24
I couldn’t stop listening, and found myself crying at the end. As an invisible PTSD survivor myself, I felt seen in this story. Physical wounds are tangible, but soul wounds are stealthy in their gnawing destruction. Frankie’s story is both personal and universal. In these days of national and global upheaval, political polarization and fear, the living memory and victories the people of the Vietnam era offer us a path forward, together.

Historia
A lone narrator meets a railway worker who is confined to a cold, gloomy station in a deep cutting near a tunnel entrance. This worker is a signalman, and it is his responsibility to give the green light for trains to pass through the area. These are slow, monotonous days. The signalman’s life is not marked by much, until the nightmares begin. Three times in a row, a ghost mysteriously appears before the signalman – and with each apparition, a tragic accident unfolds on the rail tracks. Although our narrator doubts the man at first, events soon make him a believer too.

The Light of Other Days tells the tale of what happens when a brilliant, driven industrialist harnesses the cutting edge of quantum physics to enable people everywhere, at trivial cost, to see one another at all times: around every corner, through every wall, into everyone's most private, hidden, and even intimate moments. It amounts to the sudden and complete abolition of human privacy - forever.
