It was 1778, and the recent American victory at Saratoga had netted the US a powerful ally in France. Many, including General George Washington, presumed France’s entrance into the war meant independence was just around the corner. Meanwhile, having lost an entire army at Saratoga, Great Britain pivoted to a 'southern strategy'. The army would henceforth seek to regain its southern colonies, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia, a highly profitable segment of its prewar American empire.

Good story, strange pronunciation issues

The reader mispronounces so many words, it hurt my ears. Even giving him some grace with the French commanders names, it’s about the end of the war set primarily in Carolina. It’s not “Carolinan” -it’s pronounced “Carolinian.” The reader has no “acumen” (he really butchered that one) but the book itself is brilliant. It was a great look at the history with captivating storytelling.

But it also is the source of our greatest power.

A Rock and Roll fairytale.

Some authors struggle to convey the uniqueness of characters when stories volley in and out of individual characters' lives, but Utopia Avenue presented several rich characters and their back stories. Flash backs and jumping between different characters' inner dialogue is not usually done this well. I felt each band members' voice was consistent and unique.
That said, the end was a little flat. The unlikely tragedies that all just happen to occur one on top of the other conveniently let the author off the hook on having to address real-life consequences of Rock and Roll lifestyles. Overall, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it.

Three women's voices unraveled a mystery. Getting to know the three characters, often rivals and very imperfect, brought put a lot of conflicting sympathies and confusing emotions. I found myself waffling between sympathy, hate, anger, and fear for each of the characters and the murder-mystery plot took a back seat to figuring out how these women lived. Trigger warning: there are multiple graphic depictions of domestic violence. Excellent narration.
