Historia
T. R. Fehrenbach brilliantly delineates the contrasts and conflicts between the many Mexicos, unraveling the history while weaving a fascinating tapestry of beauty and brutality: the Amerindians, who wrought from the vulnerable land a great indigenous Meso-American civilization by the first millennium BC; the successive reigns of Olmec, Maya, Toltec, and Mexic masters, who ruled through an admirably efficient bureaucracy and the power of the priests, propitiating the capricious gods with human sacrifices; the Spanish conquistadors, and much more.

Liked it. Bought it as part of my upcoming trip to Mexico. Interestingly Mexican revolution has many parallels with the Russian revolution.

Historia
What kind of mischief can result from misunderstanding the monetary system? The work of 2 obscure Scottish chemists destroyed the presidential prospects of William Jennings Bryan, as well as Franklin D. Roosevelt's decision to appease a few senators from the American West who helped communism triumph in China, are just 2 such mishaps cited in this important work by Nobel Prize-winning economist Milton Friedman. This accessible work also provides an in-depth discussion on the creation of value.

Interesting recap of the money and inflation history. I liked the story how Wyoming silver mining interests may have facilitated the take-over of China by communists.

Historia
The rags-to-riches story of one of America's wealthiest and least-known financial giants, self-made billionaire Kirk Kerkorian - the daring aviator, movie mogul, risk taker, and business tycoon who transformed Las Vegas and Hollywood to become one of the leading financiers in American business. Kerkorian combined the courage of a World War II pilot, the fortitude of a scrappy boxer, the cunning of an inscrutable poker player, and an unmatched genius for making deals.

From rags to riches.
Revisado: 09-01-20
Liked it. An insight into the life of a casino developer, a stock investor and a risk taker. Maybe the story was a bit too long and detailed at times, but generally the narrative was interesting. The story is not just about one man but it provides historical context as Kerkorian lived over 90 yrs old. The audio version is good.

Historia
The stepping stone between Europe and Africa, the gateway between the East and the West, at once a stronghold, clearinghouse and observation post, Sicily has been invaded and fought over by Phoenicians and Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, Goths and Byzantines, Arabs and Normans, Germans, Spaniards and the French for thousands of years. It has belonged to them all - and yet has properly been part of none.

Helped me answer a lot of questions about Sicily
Revisado: 08-20-19
An interesting overview of the Sicilian history. Listened to the audio version, while I was travelling for three weeks in Sicily. The book helped me put a lot of cultural things into the context and explained why Sicily evolved the way it did. Now, looking at this amazing mix of ancient greek, byzantine, norman and baroque monuments I feel less confused. Highly recommended if you can spend some extra time on exploring Sicily or to add to your general knowledge about the Mediterranean.

Historia
Humorous and entertaining, this book exposes the folly and hypocrisy of Wall Street. The title refers to a story about a visitor to New York who admired the yachts of the bankers and brokers. Naively, he asked where all the customers' yachts were? Of course, none of the customers could afford yachts, even though they dutifully followed the advice of their bankers and brokers. Full of wise contrarian advice and offering a true look at the world of investing, in which brokers get rich while their customers go broke.

So much fun to read and still very relevant

Short, witty and truthful. I was in the institutional equity sales for many years starting in late 90s. It is amazing how much of the spirit and character has still survived to this day. A must read for anyone investing and dealing with intermediaries in the financial market.

Historia
Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google are the four most influential companies on the planet. Just about everyone thinks they know how they got there. Just about everyone is wrong. For all that's been written about the Four over the last two decades, no one has captured their power and staggering success as insightfully as Scott Galloway. Instead of buying the myths these companies broadcast, Galloway asks fundamental questions.

Entertaining, insightful, what FAANGs are about
Revisado: 01-06-19
The Four by Scott Galloway (I picked audio version and finished it within two days) is a very entertaining and enlightening story of the FAANGs - Amazon, Alphabet, Apple and Facebook - how they came to dominate the modern business. Scott's focus is on the marketing side and how these companies are selling themselves to the consumers. Amazon is the ultimate infrastructure and last mile, Apple' sex appeal, Facebook - selling on heart/social attachments and Alphabet, the keeper of knowledge and the epitome of the modern god. And all these companies know about you collectively more than yourself. Enjoyed Scott's sharing his real life story how Google squeezed the Time and other traditional media. Interesting on risks and competition threats for the big four and what can undermine them - fighting each other, increased government regulation and their own complacency and lack of innovation as the management stops innovating. Also appreciated Scott' view on American education and colleges and why top degree matters. In short, it is an interesting book to read and a relevant one for our times.
What the book does not cover - and I do not think it diminishes its value - is FAANGs' inner workings - their financials, management, research and development insights, approach to M&A and work place cultures.
