Historia
According to The New York Times, Noam Chomsky is "arguably the most important intellectual alive." But he isn't easy to read...or at least he wasn't until these books came along. Made up of intensively edited speeches and interviews, they offer something not found anywhere else: pure Chomsky, with every dazzling idea and penetrating insight intact, delivered in clear, accessible, listener-friendly prose.

I wanted to honor Noam Chomsky because he is now disabled. As a life long activist this book was a gift to me. It's full of important historical facts, examples to copy and a can do attitude about building a way free of corporate domination of our media, democracy, economy and culture. Now it's up to us let's do it!

Historia
The Light Eaters is a deep immersion into the drama of green life and the complexity of this wild and awe-inspiring world that challenges our very understanding of agency, consciousness, and intelligence. In looking closely, we see that plants, rather than imitate human intelligence, have perhaps formed a parallel system.

New facts and feelings about plants
Revisado: 07-13-24
I'm a long time plant lover. This book is amazing in showing us ways our sister beings, our elders communicate and solve problems. I think this deeper look will renew our scrapy struggle for a climate safer future and a nuclear weapons free world.

Historia
As a botanist and professor of plant ecology, Robin Wall Kimmerer has spent a career learning how to ask questions of nature using the tools of science. As a Potawatomi woman, she learned from elders, family, and history that the Potawatomi, as well as a majority of other cultures indigenous to this land, consider plants and animals to be our oldest teachers.

My life as a back-to-the-land homesteader, biologist and social change activist gave me so many places to resonate with and be inspired by this book.
A book filled with beauty and a call to quiet the forces of greed, scarcity and fear in our society.
I'm ready to join Robin Wall Kimmerer in being nonviolent warriors in creating a society of sharing and caring. Finding powerful and creative ways to put profit priorities in the dunghill of history.

Historia
As a student of Woodrow Wilson at Princeton, Howard Baskerville was aflame not only with the gospel of Jesus, but with the Wilsonian gospel that constitutional democracy is the birthright of all nations. Rather than become a small-town minister like his father in South Dakota, he volunteered for missionary service in Persia. Tabriz in 1907 was a hotbed of democratic revolution. Brilliant young firebrands were among Baskerville’s students at the Presbyterian school—and became his devoted friends. He lectured on freedom; they dedicated their lives to it.

Very sad + Inspiring
Revisado: 10-19-22
With Iran in revolution now this early 1900's history of Iran's fight for constitutional democracy was sad and inspiring. Doubly interesting to me because my grandparents, Annie and Samule Wilson, are part of the story.
Sometimes I had trouble keeping track of the various Iranian heroes and villains but I appreciated the amazing amount of research that allowed the telling of this story.
The mix of Russian, British and US domination combined with US idealism also seems current.

I liked the understanding of mycorrhizal mediated communication. I was super inspired where Suzanne Simard finds the strength of her convictions to stand up to the establishment men. I want to find an equally brave voice to stand up and be outspoken for my creation of eco lifestyles. This book is a gift of understanding and inspiration.

Doughnut Economics: Seven Ways to Think Like a 21st-Century Economist

Historia
Economics is the mother tongue of public policy. It dominates our decision-making for the future, guides multi-billion-dollar investments, and shapes our responses to climate change, inequality, and other environmental and social challenges that define our times. Pity then, or more like disaster, that its fundamental ideas are centuries out of date yet are still taught in college courses worldwide and still used to address critical issues in government and business alike. That's why it is time, says renegade economist Kate Raworth, to revise our economic thinking for the 21st century. In Doughnut Economics, she sets out seven key ways to fundamentally reframe our understanding of what economics is and does. Along the way, she points out how we can break our addiction to growth; redesign money, finance, and business to be in service to people; and create economies that are regenerative and distributive by design.

Revolution by Persawtion
Revisado: 02-17-21
Helped affirm and expand a picture for my life's work of building a radically new way.
As part of the hippie / beatnik back to the land revolte I've been able to practice small scale regenerative and redistributive ways of life. This book deepened my understanding of where "there is no alternative" of Margaret Thacher came from and how to make a better way.
Two points I would add is that those of us in the rich world need to get along on less. Second we need to use nonviolent campaigns to stop those exploting people or planet.

Historia
The Overstory unfolds in concentric rings of interlocking fable that range from antebellum New York to the late 20th-century Timber Wars of the Pacific Northwest and beyond. An air force loadmaster in the Vietnam War is shot out of the sky, then saved by falling into a banyan. An artist inherits 100 years of photographic portraits, all of the same doomed American chestnut. A hard-partying undergraduate in the late 1980s electrocutes herself, dies, and is sent back into life by creatures of air and light.
