Historia
The clash of armies in the American Civil War left hundreds of thousands of men dead, wounded, or permanently damaged. Skirmishes and battles could result in casualty numbers as low as one or two and as high as 10s of thousands. The carnage of the battlefield left a lasting impression on those who experienced or viewed it, but in most cases the armies quickly moved on to meet again at another time and place. When the dust settled and the living armies moved on, what happened to the dead left behind?

Morbid, yet fascinating
Revisado: 09-05-19
The subject of the Civil War dead isn't one most want to study in full detail for obvious reasons. It can be gruesome and heart wrenching. However, it's a completely necessary aspect of Civil War studies. It's easy to see the casualty numbers and move on, but behind every number is a name, a family, sometimes a gravestone. Groeling perfectly explains the evolution of "dead detail" from its messy and disorganized beginnings to its methodical and groundbreaking conclusion while providing engaging narratives at the beginning of the chapters to set the tone for the presenting topic. I enjoyed it all (as morbid as that sounds), as well as the Appendices at the end to accompany the text. It's an informative piece of work that shouldn't be overlooked by any Civil War historian.

Charlotte leaves a life of privilege, wealth, and confining expectations to be one of the first female nurses for the Union Army. She quickly discovers that she's fighting more than just the Rebellion by working in the hospitals.

An immersive experience
Revisado: 09-02-19
Writing historical fiction without making the narrative sound like a textbook is hard enough, but merging the lives of so many characters from vastly different backgrounds and situations into one cohesive, engaging story seems nearly impossible! Jocelyn Green has done the impossible! As a lover of good fiction and amateur historian of the Civil War, I can't recommend this enough! The author has done her research admirably and I found myself nodded in agreement to all the snippets of historical accuracy she threw into the story. These characters came alive, flying off the page, and I felt as if I were reading the memoires of these people who braved the trials and struggles of being a woman in the mid-19th century. The flow of the story is excellent, the dialogue engaging, and the narration for all the variety of accents and tones were spot-on, which made it all the easier to follow. Every character's motivation, grief, and joy was believable to the fullest extent. This was the first of Green's work that I've "digested" and it certainly won't be the last!

Infamously known as the cursed Scottish play, Macbeth is perhaps Shakespeare’s darkest tragedy. As Macbeth ascends to the throne through bloody murder, he becomes a tyrant consumed by fear and paranoia.

Dramatization of a classic

Gripping, moving, timeless. This isn't a classroom reading of Shakespeare. The actors pour themselves into the cursed play and make you feel the tragedy from head to toe. Standing ovation!

Historia
Written at the request of Charles Dickens, North and South is a book about rebellion that poses fundamental questions about the nature of social authority and obedience. Gaskell expertly blends individual feeling with social concern and her heroine, Margaret Hale, is one of the most original creations of Victorian literature. When Margaret Hale's father leaves the Church in a crisis of conscience she is forced to leave her comfortable home in the tranquil countryside of Hampshire....

Captivating with every chapter
Revisado: 10-15-18
I had watched the mini series before listening to the audiobooks format, so I had an idea of the plot but I was still captivated with every chapter. that narrator made it that way and brought to life the stirring words of an author I would have liked to know personally. Great book, great performance.

Historia
In a remote corner of early Victorian England, where traditional practices remain untouched by time, Bathsheba Everdene stands out as a beacon of female independence and self-reliance. However, when confronted with three suitors, among them the dashing Sergeant Troy, she shows a reckless capriciousness that threatens the stability of the whole community. Published in 1874, and an immediate best seller, Far From the Madding Crowd established Thomas Hardy as one of Britain's foremost novelists.
