Historia
With millions of copies of his New York Times best-selling No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency mysteries in print across the globe, Alexander McCall Smith is one of the most popular novelists and humorists in the world. Starring the brilliant but bumbling Professor Doctor Moritz-Maria von Igelfeld, The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs is a wonderfully entertaining showcase for Smith's award-winning wit.

Great story and great reader
Revisado: 01-16-12
What did you love best about The Finer Points of Sausage Dogs?
I loved this story by Alexander McCall Smith. The main character is hilarious -- so pompous and full of himself, but he gets taken down a peg every now and then. All the other characters are great, too. The story is inventive, has a degree of complexity, holds your attention, and is amusing.
What about Paul Hecht’s performance did you like?
Paul Hecht was PERFECT as a reader! He did all the voices cleverly, he read clearly and caught the mood of the book completely. I enjoyed his reading of all three books in this series. I'm just sorry the series is complete. I think it's McCall Smith at his very best.

Historia
Connie's mother asks her to sell an abandoned house once owned by her grandmother in Salem, Mass. Relunctantly, Connie moves to the small town and inhabits the crumbling, ancient house, trying to restore it to a semblance of order. Curious things start to happen when Connie finds the name "Deliverance Dane" on a yellowed scrap of paper and begins to have visions of a long ago woman condemned for practicing "physick," or herbal healing, on her neighbors in 1690s Salem.

Mediocre at best
Revisado: 10-26-10
I spent a lot of time marveling at how dense this Harvard PhD student was. She had to be hit in the head a million times by obvious things that she should have known just through study in her own field of "expertise." The weak story was made worse by the writing style. The reader was led through excruciatingly detailed renditions of the most mundane things -- just walking into a building and opening a door took minutes of narration. I often lost interest and my mind began wandering, returning some time later only to realize that I hadn't missed a thing. And that postscript!
The strong point for me was the narrator. She did a great job.

Historia
Many astonishing and affecting things happen at the racetrack, and the mysterious universe of horse racing, passionate, cold-hearted, pure, corrupt, is woven into a marvelous tapestry of joy and love, chicanery, folly, greed, and reckless courage. Spanning two years on the circuit, from Kentucky and California to New York and Paris, Horse Heaven, puts us among trainers, nervey jockeys, billionaire breeders, and restless track wives.

Horse Heaven=Pure Heaven

Jane Smiley demonstrates her brilliance in this book, illustrating similarities between the horses and the people who own, breed, train, and race them. And Shelley Thompson is a truly engaging narrator. It was a great experience!
