Predictable and dragged on for far too long. Main character is meant to be level headed and smart but comes off as a dense fool. How much evidence does she need to determine if he likes her? Good grief

Historia
Bernard Cornwell, the New York Times best-selling "reigning king of historical fiction" (USA Today), tackles his most thrilling, rich, and enthralling subject yet - the heroic tale of Agincourt. The epic battle immortalized by William Shakespeare in his classic Henry V is the background for this breathtaking tale of heroism, love, devotion, and duty from the legendary author of the Richard Sharpe novels and the Saxon Tales.

Why the music?!
Revisado: 01-12-25
The music randomly featured off and on throughout the story blared over the narration and was distracting. It served no purpose other than to ruin Bernard Cornwell’s book.

Annoying characters
Revisado: 12-11-24
For all the hand-wringing Lilly does regarding Snow Flower - constantly droning on about her guilt and worthlessness - Snow Flower is the annoying one. All she does is whine and feel sorry for herself. She lied throughout their childhood, betraying Lilly’s trust, and then wallowed in self pity and wouldn’t let Lilly help her. Yet the author SNOW FLOWER as the victim in this story. Um, no. Not to mention endlessly reminding the reader/listener how “worthless” women are. Good grief the point was made by hour 10. Very disappointed considering how good Shanghai Girls was.

Hidden gem
Revisado: 09-23-24
I’d never heard of this book until it cropped up in my Audible recommendations. Great writing and such an addictive listen. It’s not often that a flawed/unlikeable main character is compelling enough to carry a show/movie/book, but this one did. Incredible. The only downside is that the ending was too abrupt. The story had definitely come to an end, but could’ve been more polished.

Historia
After Englishman John Blackthorne is lost at sea, he awakens in a place few Europeans know of and even fewer have seen—Nippon. Thrust into the closed society that is seventeenth-century Japan, a land where the line between life and death is razor-thin, Blackthorne must negotiate not only a foreign people, with unknown customs and language, but also his own definitions of morality, truth, and freedom. As internal political strife and a clash of cultures lead to seemingly inevitable conflict, Blackthorne’s loyalty and strength of character are tested by both passion and loss.

Starts a bit slow but picks up after a few chapters. By the end, I was 100% hooked it was so good. Such a shame the author died right before finishing it. Would have become wildly popular if she had.
