Too long and convoluted

I found this long, drawn out drama a bit to convoluted to stay engaged. Way too many characters to try to follow. And various story lines that kept jumping back and forth in time. I’ve enjoyed audio dramas by these authors in the past, but they were much shorter in length. This may have been better if it was broken down into tighter episodes that had start and end point. 8 hours straight with no breaks is just too long to keep my attention.

Once again our hero Gordianus finds himself immersed in an tricky mystery while caught up in historical events of Ancient Rome. This time we are outside, and inside, the gates of Massilia (modern day Marseille) during its siege by the armies of Julius Caesar. The native Greeks have sided with Pompey in the Roman civil wars just before the fall of the Republic. And our hero must solve a mystery amongst the ruling families while also seeking out news of his lost son. I love the story telling of Steven Saylor and how he weaves historical events into his narrative. The characters are always real and believable. And the backstory and setting transports you. This is another in a great series that will please mystery lovers and history buffs alike. And will spur you to read on to find out how our hero will survive amongst the turmoil.

Big Finish does it again with another fantastic rendition of a well-known classic. Jonathan Barnes’ adaptation and narrative is so engrossing and well-paced that I found myself staying up late to finish the play in one long run. The full cast version of the story is such a treat that it will appeal to all listeners. And the accompanying sound design is so well done I felt surrounded by the world of Dracula throughout. Audio is such a great medium for this story. I will always treasure this selection in my library.

I found this mistaken identity scenario very unrealistic. The expectations and assumptions made by the protagonist (Giles) seemed so unbelievable I just couldn't get into the story. Ditched it after about 5 chapters.

A rogue that never reedems himself. A women who make one bad decision after another and whines about it. Dialogue that at times seems like it's written by school children. And a narrator that does ridiculous American accents that grate on the ear. Don't bother.

Big Finish does it again! Another great collection for the Doctor Who spin-off characters Henry Jago and Professor Lightfoot. Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter are entertaining as always. And the incorporation of the character of Leela from the original Talons of Weng-Chiang storyline back in the 1970’s was a brilliant choice. Louise Jameson is a fantastic actress who knows her character well and brings a new dimension to the series. The writers also stepped it up and deliver us another great set of stories, a nice mix of stories different from one another but with an over-arching story arc to tie them together. I particularly enjoyed Swan Song by John Dorney which I think is one of his best. And the teaser at the end made me smile when I heard who would be joining next series. No spoilers, you will have to listen to find out.

Big Finish Productions, the makers of full cast Doctor Who audio dramas, adds to its library of audiobooks and plays this fabulous collection of short stories. Read by well known performers from its other Big Finish ranges, these quick glimpses into the life of the Doctor and his companions are truly remarkable. Each 15-20 minute story brings to life a different iteration of our favorite time-traveling Time Lord. Don’t be fooled by its “short trip” title. These stories are dense, complex and fast-paced narratives that will pull you in right from the start. And they are so very clever it will leave you eager for more. Good thing Big Finish has a whole bunch more for us to digest. I love to sneak these quick hit stories in during my daily commute, or when I’m making dinner. Just the right story length for those “short trips” to and from the parents house, or on the way to book club. Hey, maybe I should recommend this at book club...they are so intriguing it could make for some good “what if” discussions. If you’re a sci-fi fan and love good story telling, this is a collection perfect for you.

Humorous and entertaining launch of a great spin off series

The creative minds at Big Finish hit gold with the first Companion Chronicle starting Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter as the lovable duo of Henry Jago and Professor Lightfoot. To all our delight they took that success and spun off a new series of full cast audio dramas with these two characters at the fore. The style of writing, the stellar performances, and superb post-production effects and music bring to life a Victorian London that you can almost taste and smell. The easy chemistry between Benjamin and Baxter, and the fun the entire cast and crew had in putting these on, truly comes out in their performances. The follow on interviews were an extra bonus, although a bit long, which makes these plays even more enjoyable. I’m looking forward to continuing on to the next series with sheer pleasure.

A very entertaining throwback to the 1977 days of Dr. Who. How thrilling that Big Finish thought to revisit two much loved characters from the Philip Hinchcliffe era of Dr Who. Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter step right into their old roles as Jago and Lightfoot, brilliantly sending us back in time to a period after the meet the Doctor in the The Talons of Weng-Chiang. Andy Lane also does a fabulous job writing a script that embodies the heart and soul of the original Who world, while giving us something new to sink into. I'm excited to know there is even more of Jago and Lightfoot in the Big Finish Productions archive. Well done by all involved.

An excellent narration brings out the best of this unique piece of historical fiction. The streets of Prague and New York of the1930's come alive in such a way that you feel you are there standing on the corner watch events unfold. The characters and their struggle seem so real you are pulled along to witness their emotional complex journey as if you were one of the family. Bravo to both the author and the narrator for keeping me enthralled for 26+ hours.
