Historia
"Thy kingdom come." Christians frequently recite these words. But what is God's kingdom? Such a question has fascinated the faithful for more than two millennia. Throughout history we have pondered our ultimate salvation and the "end times", from St. Paul's eschatological epistles to modern best sellers like the Left Behind series. Now this brilliant course introduces you to that history and practice of eschatology, or the study of the final events in history.

Better Understanding of International Issues
Revisado: 04-24-25
All the lectures were enlightening, but the last two on pre-millenialism and dispensationalism helped me make sense of today's American Conservative Protestant support of violence in the Middle East.

This novel unveils a fascinating plot about how a high school freshman overcomes the hateful attitudes of upperclassmen in his new hometown. Even minor characters are memorable, especially the protagonist's journalism teacher, Mrs. Kinney.

Historia
After the staggering slaughter of back-to-back world wars, the West embraced the ideal of the "open society". The promise: By liberating ourselves from the old attachments to nation, clan, and religion that had fueled centuries of violence, we could build a prosperous world without borders, freed from dogmas and managed by experts. But the populism and nationalism that are upending politics in America and Europe are a sign that after three generations, the postwar consensus is breaking down.

Historia
Richard Hanania has come out of nowhere to become one of the best-known writers in the nation in the last few years. In this book, he directs his attention to the culture war that has driven society apart and presents a stunning new theory about what is going on. In a nation nearly evenly split between conservatives and liberals, the left dominates nearly all major institutions, including universities, the government, and corporate America. Hanania argues that this is as much a legal requirement as it is an issue of one side triumphing in the marketplace of ideas.

New view of Civil Rights law
Revisado: 11-04-23
This book is a unique, politically conservative view of how the widely popular Civil Rights Act of 1964 morphed into a behemoth that affects contemporary Americans' constitutional freedoms.

Historia
In the 1960s, Mao launched China’s Cultural Revolution. Cities grew overcrowded. Technocrats demanded progress from above. Anyone opposed was sent to be “re-educated.” China’s revolution was bloody, fast, and a failure, but what if America started a revolution at the same time, based on the same bad ideas, and it’s just been slower, calmer, and more effective?

Historia
Hardship is now equated with victimhood. Outward displays of vulnerability in defeat are celebrated over winning unabashedly. The pursuit of excellence and exceptionalism are at the heart of American identity, and the disappearance of these ideals in our country leaves a deep moral and cultural vacuum in its wake. But the solution isn’t to simply complain about it. It’s to revive a new cultural movement in America that puts excellence first again.

Insightful Views on Victimization
Revisado: 08-09-23
This book offers unique insights from a classical liberal (read: Ronald Reaganesque) GOP presidential primary contender. Two most interesting proposals: institute an inheritance tax of up to 59 percent so that offspring of the wealthy cannot aimlessly coast on their parents' money, and require teenagers to engage in national service projects during their summer vacations from school so they will experience civic responsibility. Sometimes the author tries too hard to shoehorn ideas into his text, resulting in overly simplistic arguments on philosophy (Hume and Kant) and history (the U.S. Civil War, in particular). The author sheds new light on several 20th century Supreme Court decisions. Overall, this book is a relevant and constructive attack on the ever-expanding victim culture in America, and it encourages individuals to save the country by casting themselves as cooperative and spirited underdogs.

Springtime for Snowflakes: 'Social Justice' and Its Postmodern Parentage is a daring and candid memoir. NYU Professor Michael Rectenwald - the notorious @AntiPCNYUProf - illuminates the obscurity of postmodern theory to track down the ideas and beliefs that spawned the contemporary social justice creed and movement. In fast-paced creative non-fiction, Rectenwald begins by recounting how his Twitter capers and media exposure met with the swift and punitive response of NYU administrators and fellow faculty members.

Historia
The award-winning political theorist Yoram Hazony argues that the best hope for Western democracy is a return to the empiricist, religious, and nationalist traditions of America and Britain—the conservative traditions that brought greatness to the English-speaking nations and became the model for national freedom for the entire world. Conservatism: A Rediscovery explains how Anglo-American conservatism became a distinctive alternative to divine-right monarchy, Puritan theocracy, and liberal revolution.

1984 isn't just a novel; it's a key to understanding the modern world. George Orwell's final work is a treasure chest of ideas and memes - Big Brother, the Thought Police, Doublethink, Newspeak, 2+2=5 - that gain potency with every year. Particularly in 2016, when the election of Donald Trump made it a best seller ("Ministry of Alternative Facts", anyone?).

Passable Work on Orwell's Literary Life
Revisado: 09-03-22
As a lecturer whose courses often emphasize dystopian literature, I have spent much of my adult life researching Orwell; thus, I enjoy how Lynskey lucidly weaves together so much material about Orwell. Lynskey's information isn't new, for the most part, although the author includes a few anecdotes I had never heard before. Due to Lynskey's background, especially as a contributor to The Guardian, I was not surprised to stumble incessantly upon prose disparaging of American culture ("the consequences of so many Americans' abdication from reality have been disastrous," Chapter 13) and of any politicos to the right of Obama. Although I'm far from a Trump supporter, the author's emotionally-charged attacks against the 45th president ("the president meets most of the criteria of Orwell's 1944 definition of fascism," Chapter 13), especially in the Introduction and late in the book, become tedious. Overall, Lynskey's work might contain enough literary material to save it from its many left-of-center diatribes. In historical nonfiction, objectivity makes for better reading than personal subjectivity.

Alex Marlow was just a 21-year-old UC Berkeley student when renowned media mogul Andrew Breitbart hired him as his first employee. Breitbart began mentoring Marlow on how to fight the culture war one headline at a time and to remain resilient in the face of personal attacks. Now, in this eye-opening and timely book, Marlow explains how the establishment press destroyed its own credibility with a relentless stream of “fake news” designed to smear Donald Trump and his supporters while advancing a leftist agenda.

Corporate Influence Detailed
Revisado: 07-23-22
The most useful information in this quite useful book is detail on corporate ownership of news media and its concomitant corruptive influence. As a retired news reporter and editor who worked in an era 20 years ago when the media at least pretended objectivity, I was struck by the factuality and objectivity of this book. It's depressing how propagandistic America's "news" sources have become.
