Virgil survives, but his language and memory are altered, and he emerges into a world no longer familiar to him. Awakening in this new life, Virgil begins to piece together his personal history and the lore of his broken town, with the help of a cast of affable and curious locals. Did not hold my attention
Revisado: 09-23-24
Loved “Peace Like a River,” and looked forward to “Virgil Wander,” but after multiple attempts gave up about 3 hours in. There are many beautifully written sentences, but they were not enough to sustain my interest in the story. The reader’s voice also distracted me.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Powerful
Revisado: 08-23-24
This book does not try to “make sense” of this terrible conflict, it captures the difficulties, the unknowns, and the tragic consequences for so many. Essential for those who care about the entire island of Ireland.

Historia
In June 1993, a group of young guerilla filmmakers spent four weeks making Horror Movie, a notorious, disturbing, art-house horror flick. The weird part? Only three of the film’s scenes were ever released to the public, but Horror Movie has nevertheless grown a rabid fanbase. Three decades later, Hollywood is pushing for a big budget reboot.

Moving, inventive, poignant and magical

Loved the plot, that follows its own unfolding in surprising ways. It’s a beautiful telling of self discovery, sibling affection and competition, and sacrificial love. It’s also hilarious and totally believable, even as it’s fantastical. The performance is captivating. Loved this so much.

Can’t say if the book was any good as I was really distracted by the song-song style and affect of the reader. I tried for about three hours but could not continue.

Not especially informative

While some parts of the book were interesting, in the main I found it generally lacking in depth. I was hoping for a more academic history of Ireland and Irish Americans than is offered here.

Historia
The Irish Revolution has long been mythologized in American culture but seldom understood. For too long the story of Irish independence and its aftermath has been told only within an Anglo-Irish context. Now, in the critically acclaimed Bitter Freedom, journalist Maurice Walsh, with "a novelist's eye for the illuminating detail of everyday lives in extremis" ( Prospect), places revolutionary Ireland in the panorama of the global disorder born of the terrible slaughter of World War I and provides a kaleidoscopic portrait of the human face of the conflict.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Good, but could have used an editor
Revisado: 12-13-22
Familiar Stephen King storyline, reminded me of the structure of many of his previous books. And like “The Stand,” “Fairy Tale” is made up of what could be taken as two very different stories; a lengthy part one leading to (but very different from) a lengthy part two. “Fairy Tale” differs from “The Stand” however in that the content of “Fairy Tale” is not powerful enough to carry the length well, and at times it seemed to me a bit more editing would have helped. Still, if you are a King fan, you will likely enjoy this book. Narration was outstanding.

Weak plot, hard to believe characters, distracting reader
Revisado: 11-22-22
Don’t know where to start. The plot was contrived, the characters were difficult to believe, especially the main character whose inner dialogue sounded more 21st century than 17th. The main reader’s voice, coupled with very awkward rendering of 1600s English, was so very distracting I could hardly focus on the story. I tried really hard to stick with this book, but had to bail after 8 chapters or so. It’s altogether really a pretty awful book along with an awful reading of it.

Compelling story, elegantly written. Grim, detailed, intense, but so not hopeless. Spare, gripping, moving. The performance is equally powerful.
